I am also brand new to the Hobie world. Picked up my wave 2 weeks ago. What an absolute blast -- only regret is that I waited so long. Although they rarely seem to come on the market second hand in NZ.
Mine came with a trailer and its so convenient, the reason being that even as a newbie I can get this thing from trailor to sailing in under 15 minutes (4 goes so far and Im getting faster.) Sooo, if I come home from work and theres a nice wind its totally doable to go out for a quick hour or so blast.
Im not sure if I would take advantage of those spare hours if I had to load then assemble the cat on the beach. That said I understand that the SE (the one I have) with the single piece cup holder tramp, is the one that can be easily disassembled & car topped.
My 2 cents though, get a trailer if you have the space at home -- small investment that makes the sailing experience o much easier
