Hi,

Now that tillers are Class legal, who's using what kind?

I bought a telescoping Ronstat Battle stick. I liked the size, but it wasn't long enough, small, light weight design-IMO less is more on the Wave,- but I broke it third time out:<

I put my H16 Hotstick on, it's way heavy and too big. Some guys are using golf clubs.

Whatever you choose, Rob, my Hobie dealer strongly recommends reinforcing the hollow aluminum crossbar to keep it from bending later.

Hobie sells the little plastic piece needed. Matt posted the right part number below.

I will post the pictures as soon as I figure out how.

Being cheap, I built my own.

I bought a Ronstan rubber U-joint from West Marine ($13) with a Round Tiller Adapter from Sailboats, Inc ($3), then I went to Lowe's and got some 3/4" white PVC water pipe with fittings (about $2 total). I made it about 4 feet long. It's pretty stiff, light weight and easy to hold.

Previously, I had made a dual extension, entirely of 3/4" PVC conduit parts from Lowe's. I accidently broke the mounting braket at the IWCA Nationals last December, and since the new rule specifies "a single extension", I decided to make a new class-legal version.

I'm cheap too.

I used the same rubber u-joint you did and an abandoned fibreglass ski pole. You have to drill out the ski pole a bit to get the end of the joint in and if you aren't really careful and don't drill straight it can break. I too broke one in Key Largo. I bought a piece of stainless tubing and glued it over the end of the pole. It looks like a Hobie white stick now.

I cut off a piece of aluminum bicycle handlebar and pounded it down to the centre of the tiller connector to act as a reinforcement.

The recomended Hobie parts for the tiller connection are:

Yoke 3205
Bushing 40600001
Drill Letter “V” .3770 (3/8 .3750 wallowed out a bit)

The bushing keeps the yoke bolt from compressing the tiller crossbar tube and (stainless) from contacting aluminum.

Here is mine....I ordered a 5/8 dia. piece of Carbon Fiber tubing from Rockwest composites...I think it was 59.00 bucks and came 6 ft long....so you have extra. I epoxied a cork ball on the end and put a coat of West system epoxy over the cork then 3 coats of varnish for UV protection.......CF is hard to break, so far its doing good, and I've fallen on it, and Sat on it, .......:D

... and an advanced technical question:

With the EZ-Loc rudder system at what angle do you drill the bolt hole?
I get to install one on our club Wave in the spring, if it ever comes, and the pivot has to tip forward enough that the extension will hang when the tillers are up and won't hit the mainsheet when the rudders are down.

I noticed on yours, mtmilam, that you drilled two holes before you got the perfect position.

Actually, with the tiller mounted on Top of the bar, when the sail and Mast was raked back, the foot of the sail just "barely" would rub on the Tiller ext. yoke, not bad, but I wanted to see how it would do mounted facing forward.....It works Ok facing forward, but I went back to the top mount, just because I like better....I also added a shackle to the Halyard instead of the J hook and that made my sail about 1/2 in. higher on the mast, which got rid of the rub from the ext. yoke.....

So, I can go both ways if I wanted. :D And You HAD to Really sheet in hard to have it rub anyway.

Big Whoop, for my EZ-Locs with the rubber U-joint, I drilled the holes just a little forward of straight up, when the rudders are up. This puts the U-joint at about 45 degrees forward when they're down, which seems to work out pretty well for me. When I say "just a little forward," I mean when you look at the tiller arms from the sides, follow the line up, and that's the angle you want.

I would think that angle should work for the metal U-joints also.

I used this last year as a temp set up and liked it enough to drill a hole and attach it for this year. The conduet is 50 inches which works if you sit on the hump between tImage

Fleet 119 is alive and well. Sorry, no Madcatter this year. I'm still a newbee at this sailing stuff. Many of the stories told at fleet parties involve the Madcatter event. Sounds like it's well run and a good time for all.

Sorry to hear you can't make Madcatter, newbee's are always welcome. We have novice chalk talks, mentor programs and often new racers come with their boats and never even race. (sometimes it can blow hard in May sometimes on wind at all)

One thing is a sure bet, everyone has a blast and learns a ton about the Hobie Way:>

Hope to see you this season...Rochester and Toronto have excellent events with in a couple of hours of you.
