Last season the bottom edge of my CompTip crumbled. The small lip that prevents the ComTip from sliding into the bottom mast section dissintegrated and now it is extremely difficult to take the mast appart after a day of sailing. Has this happened to any one else? Any ideas on how to fix it?

If it were me ... I'd take the track off and grind back the crumbling edge (Why is it crumbling?) and then wrap some glass cloth with epoxy around the whole deal. Grind it out so the track will go back on and it should be stronger than ever.

Why is the plastic crumbling? What year is your boat?

I don't ever take mine apart...Probably can't get it apart now...Is there a reason you take the mast apart?????

I take mine apart to trailer it. It's a lot shorter that way, and I have little holders on the trailer so it will go underneath the boat.

I also take it apart to store it in the winter 'cause it will go up in the loft of the garage that way. But since I have to trail it home it's already apart by that point.

From what I recall, that "lip" is just black gelcoat. There may be some fiberglass in there, but the "lip" is just a stop to keep the tube in a tube from sliding down any more. Not really structural so you don't need to go big.

To fix it, you could just use bondo as this isn't true structure, but it may chip off. If it does, then move to plan B. Sanding a section and building up a layer of fiberglass would be the best next step. File, sand, and paint it with flat black if you want it to sort of match.

I would not use epoxy, polyester laminating resin will do just fine and is easy to work with.

As I said, "if it were me ...", I'd use epoxy. Polyester is probably good enough and quicker to work with but epoxy is a better glue so it sticks to the existing material better. I would always do repairs with epoxy.

But that's just me. I used polyester for years. Worked. Now I use epoxy.

Your mileage may vary, objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear, watch for overhead wires.

PS Someplace on the net there a cross section of a Hobie comptip. A fibreglass tube with what the factory describes as "putty". I guess your putty is crumbling.
