There are two s hooks in the Hobie parts list, one for the halyard and a more heavy duty one for the mainsheet. The mainsheet one is made of more substantial metal than the halyard one, which I must admit seems backwards to me. I seem to have two of the lighter halyard ones. Has anybody had any issues with using the lighter one on the mainsheet? I have a set of Harken blocks with a ratchet on order and I've got until spring to set this stuff up and be ready to go. It would be ... disappointing to bend the thing open while I was in front and moving away, the guys behind me struggling, ...

Sorry. I was fantasizing a little there.

Wave halyards have maybe 2 or 3:1 possible loads. Main Sheets are 4:1 so maybe need to be stronger. Not really sure on the load capacity of the halyard hook.

tooo funny..my edits the ladies in front of you.....

On the subject of hooks,

Matt what are the chances of making the halyard hook with a keeper on it?

I LOVE my 'cheesy hooks' and flaunt them shamelessly at my buddies rigging their F18's. I kept the stock main top block just because of the hook, deciding when it fails I'll replace with the better Harken. Two years, and tons of regattas, later no visible wear yet.

The halyard hook is an issue tho, when dropping the sail. It will come out of the of the grommet and the sail comes down without the halyard. Kathy K. told me years ago to tie a 8 thru the top of hook and run it continuous. That works, but a keeper on the hook would work better.

Worth another look. The hook was part of the simple rigging process, but even a little rubber flap would work.

I think the factory has solved the problem of the halyard hook by replacing it with a half twist shackle. I think the halyards on the parts list are that way. Do the new boats come like that?

Still coming with the hook I believe. Still... quicker and easier to rig, if you keep tension on the halyard.

Not necessarily.

6 months till Madcatter. We have lots of time to "make our own luck :) "

Time for the gym, time to watch what I eat, time for MidWinters East, time to read every sailing article I can find and hopefully, about a month, of time on the water. Isn't that what dry suits were made for?

Yeah, I see you've got the Wichard item in there. That's what I put on my halyard the second time the S hook popped off when taking the sail down. Guess that explains why I've got two halyard hooks.

At any rate I'm sure the shackle makes the boat much faster than careful eating habits, gym time, learning, and practice. Well, ... pretty sure.
