In the summertime, I rarely have to worry about capsizing, unless I do it deliberately.

For yesterday's club races, the water was cool, the air was hot, and the winds were light-to-non-existent. As the starting horn sounded, no one moved; so I jumped up and ran off the bow yelling "Man Overboard!"

The old guys on the Safety Boat came over and asked if I did that intentionally, and I said it was absolutely accidental.

By the time I got back on board and got the boat re-oriented, the rest of the fleet was half-way to the first mark, so I paddled back to shore for a cold one.

I have never had problem righting the wave with my 68 kg. I don't care wind direction. I always throw the line over the upper hull. The most important for lightweight person like me is to lean back as far away from the boat as possible for maximum leverage. My body is very close to the water surface but out of the water. And yes, sometimes I need to be patient to wait for the mast to come out of the water.

Hello. Newbie to forum. Is it possible to right a Wave or Getaway without a Righting line (i.e. use main sail line, weight placement on hull) ?? The shop that I rent the boats from doesn't attach a righting line on rentals - any insight if it's possible. Thanks.

Any line will work in a pinch.

If it's a club Wave and you've got enough "personal ballast", you can just grab the trampoline laces and lean back.

Ok, thanks guys for the extra tips - as well as to the previous posters for the general righting insight.

My youngest kid weighs 130lbs and rights the wave all day long in all kinds of weather and he does it pretty darn fast. It technique, not weight. PRACTICE on calm days. Then practice on big days.

Make SURE the main is uncleated and there is lots of slack in the line.

I wear the beforementioned gill booties OR my beloved Chuck Taylors and never slip.

The poster who mentioned the boat getting away from you if FACT. If you go over, make sure you dont seperate yourself from the boat because it will skate away faster than you can swim.
