Water here use to be a lot better. Just to many people for the sewer plants to keep up with and to much chemical dumping. That is the reason we are all moving to Pensacola / Fort Walton Fla area in about a year or so. No chemical plants, emerald green water you can see he bottom at at 20 feet and WHITE sand beaches with sand that just fails off of you. BUT we do have one of the bet sailing place in the country at the Texas City Dike. www.tcdyc.com

Doug, I really appreciate your insight. I have a job offer in Houston that I have been considering and water is a huge part of my life. I have always been at the beach. Long Island's beaches may not be perfect, but I was really surprised by what I saw in the Houston area. My expectations were just different.
Long Island is just so rediculously expensive...but I think I would go nuts living in Sugarland and doing weekend sailing in the Clear Lake area.
I would move out of NY for those emerald green waters you described. HMMM, maybe Tampa.
Thanks again,
Jeff

Jeff:

The sailing at Texas City Dike is great and Sugarland is not bad. Water just sucks. Send me a email link and I will show you Fort Walton water.

False Bay, South Africa (between Cape Town and Cape Point on the Indian Ocean side). I think the first pic is near Simon's Town. The second is Kalk Bay. As with most beautiful places, pictures don't do it justice.

But the sharks are huge (I saw several that would have been longer than a 16). Whales can also be a hazzard to navigation. And it's drysuit weather in the middle of their summer. I was last there in February '05. My cheapo thermometer said the water at Kalk was about 45F.

FWIW - My wife is from S.A. We were visiting relatives. And no, I didn't sail. But I did surf in Durban (where the water was more like 80 and the sharks were smaller).

I appreciate all the responses. I turned down the offer and will stay on LI for the time being.
Hawaii is gorgeous! I was there in Kaui last year.
This is from the Napali Coast...

This one is Lloyd Harbor on LI

This one is from the West Marina where I dock my Buccaneer 285 and also usually launch the Hobie Wave.

Of course Clearwater Fl is a beautiful place to sail...

A few more...
This is a dog fishing on Kauai

This is Long Beach, LI. I have not done a beach lauch yet...not sure where it is legal to do so...but there is always a steady breeze.

And my favorite unknown park in Amagansett, NY. You can beach launch to Peconic Bay, just beyond the bend in the creek. There are two trees that are just perfect to set up a hammock overlooking everything.

The only problem with sailing off Long Beach is dodging the Cigarette boats!

Sailing in Texas is a blast - there are plenty of choices from the Gulf Coast waters to Lake Texoma on the Texas/Oklahoma border, the wind is always blowing, there are lots of places to explore and anchor for an evening, plenty of fun regattas throughout Texas

Sorry Hobie Fleet 8 don't seem to have a good internet presence. It’s because we all out sailing. Lived here all my life love sailing all over Texas, and the best is Texas City Dike, 5 mile long Dike that blocks the waves but let the win BLOOOOW!!! If that not enough head out to Gulf from the Dike and get your fill.
PS Let me know when you get here.
