Hello,

A friend has an unmarked sail. I think it might be a wave main sail. Where can I find a basic height and width dimension?
(Bolt rope length and Downhaul grommet to clew grommet width)

I pulled:
17'6" Height
83" Width

Thanks, Blair

Calculating that it appears too small, possibly a Hobie Holder mainsol or some other dinghy. The measurements work out to about 70 square feet accounting for some roach. A Wave main has 5 full batten pockets, with a large roach and is 95 ft/sq or 9 meters sq. Was about to roll mine out but those simple old geometry skills kicked in. Does the sail have a Hobie tag sewed in down there near the tack?

Thanks, Gordo, Lots of good thoughts. I appreciate your response.

That is a good thought to look at geometry.
I multiplied 17'6"x83" (17.5' x6.9') to get 121 Sq Ft if the sail was rectangle...or 1/2 that (60 sqft) if geometry was a simple triangle.
I wasn't sure how much area to add for the roach.

To answer your question (and add a few strange details, hence the question):
No, it doesn't have a Hobie tag sewn in by the tack, so not stock hobie wave sail.
The sail has the hobie "H" logo at the top of the sail.
Sail had 4-5 full width battens.
Sail is open foot. (i.e no boom)

Thanks again for the help.

I found these dimensions in the class rules for the Wave. Maybe they help...

Measurement Area Dimensions in Feet/Inches
Luff : 18' 0" - 216"
Leech : 18' 6" - 222"
Foot : 7' - 84"
Girth Measurement Area Dimensions in Inches
1/8: 37"
1/4: 54"
½: 71"
3/4: 80"

Well, since you've got a Hobie sail of some kind, I'd guess maybe somebody cut down an h14 sail or maybe some other off class from the old days. Am at a loss. Anybody?

If you post a pic of that sail it well help to identify.
