I have a wave but my comments are not as an expert. I race cars and have studied metal fatigue. Metal fatigue is complicated and I am a History major. But, that bolt sure induced weakness in that crossbar for sure. One bolt? One big ass bolt as compared to the size of the crossbar?

Same thing happened to me last weekend. Sailing with friend in gulf of Triest in light bora wind, 2 ft waves. All of a sudden front cross bar brakes in two. My (EU) wave is 10 year old and has accumulated 160 sailing days so far.
I am surprised reading that French design has an issue here. I thought wave was an American design even if dispatched from Toulon, France. Ok if sail colour is different here but there should be no cost reduction on the most vital parts of the boat like mast step or cross bar.

Matt, is this I-beam or thick extrusion?
I fully agree with Lizzard that that bolt is problematic.

The Hobie Wave is a USA design. I was actually sailing, with the then owner of the company, when we bent the prototype... We went to a thicker extrusion before it went into production in the early 90s. I don't think we have ever seen one fail here. The US extrusion looks like an oval inside... really thick.

France simply tried to sleeve their production back in the day. This is previous to us buying Hobie Cat Europe. Not sure what they use as current.

We pound the piss out of the waves in all types of wind/water and I have never seen failure of any type on a Wave. We are all kinda waiting for comptips to start breaking off on the old boats though, seems like they get a little more play in them as time goes on.

I have just ordered a new US design front cross bar at my dealer. It is 200 USD more expensive than the original one. Hope it will last much longer.
