Thinking about ways to make my Wave faster. Just wondering if adding a jib adds a little or a lot of extra power/speed?

Are there any cons to adding a jib? Does it affect hull flying?

I usually sail by myself, but sometimes my kids come along (8 & 10yrs old).

Thanks - Brian

Also, are there upgrades for rudders that make a difference to speed?

I keep wondering too - I've read all the posts I can find on it and some people love them (I think they have usually modified their jibs) and others say they are not of significant value. I think Matt may have posted something about a potential 5% speed bump? I've also seen someone post logic that says:

1/ In light winds they are too small to make much difference
2/ In heavy winds you don't need any more power
3/ There is a small band on wind speed where they might help a bit

On the other hand, if you have a kid sailing with you, they might be fun for them as they can handle the jib sheets.

While I can't say how much speed the jib may add, I can say that I NEVER sail the Wave without it.

1. In light winds it adds 25sq feet of sail, of course it makes a difference.
2. The Wave is under powered in all winds and the jib adds more excitement. Some, have said the jib may help lift the bows a bit in heavy winds.
3. Use the jib in all wind speed. It adds more sail.

Rick White was the biggest opponent to the Wave's jib. But, it's obvious that he too wanted more and came up with the hooter for the Wave. Now most of us don't want to drop another $1500+ into the Wave for a hooter, so we are left with the factory or after market jib.

I really like to push my Wave and the jib most certainly helps me in this endeavor. It is easy to handle solo and when there is crew it gives them something to do besides holding on for life and limb.

I do think it helps in flying the hull too. I did change the sheeting to a 2:1 ratio.

Tradisrad how did you setup your 2:1 jib sheet? Did you place the pulley blocks near the clew or did you use a pigtail setup? How long is your jib sheet due to the 2:1;setup....about 35'? Any info would be appreciated!
