You have another rod holder I'll bet you didn't know you had. How about your mast holder? Turns out that my Scotty/West Marine adjustable rod holder drops right into the mast holder for a near-perfect fit. No hole drilling, no hull cutouts, no screws, no silicone, no nuthin'! Attach a leash and you're good to go! :D

Then, if you really want to get fancy, you could mount a Scotty three rod holder bar in the mast holder. Maybe stick your fish finder in the center mount and two rods on either side. The possibilities fairly boggle the mind...

Using the sail mast tube for a rod holder recepticle is an excellent idea! Only question, doesn't the rod holder rotate freely when installed there? Have you come up with a fix for that if it does?
You're right though about the potential utility of the tube for other uses. A white light or strobe post for night fishing comes to mind also as does a GPS mounting fixture.

Good point. But if that baby started swinging around suddenly, it sure would alert me to the fact that I had a good fish on!

Did you get the rod holder locally? I'm here in Tallahassee and would like to know where to pick one up....

Yep--our local West Marine store carries them, but wait for a sale. You might be able to save 10 bucks off the regular price. They come in both black and white. This is basically the same as the Scotty rod-holder, the only difference being it has the West Marine nameplate on it.

Seems to me that a tall person might bang the rod with a pedal unless some kind of extension was used... But still a cool idea.

your Hobie dealer should also have the holders in stock, they will say Hobie on the! I've never shopped around for them but everyone comes in the store and asks why we sell then for so cheep....I simply go because we love fishing! So I assume(I know what assume means) that your dealer is cheaper than the chain stores!
