I would consider the Humminbird 385ci Combo. (designed for kayaks). I love mine. Mounted a Ram Universal Mount in a cup holder. http://www.amazon.com/Humminbird-3-5-In ... -3-catcorr |

You don't need one, but fishfinders are definitely an advantage. Just because you can see the fish doesn't mean they are going to bite! I have always used cheaper model fishfinders like Eagle(not a big fan of Humminbird, they seem to have more than normal connector problems) and they have always worked great in fresh and salt water. I prefer a hand held GPS because you can use it away from the kayak, where I fish, sometimes you have to find the lake before you go fishing. Fishfinders are easy to mount on a kayak. |

No, you don't need one. Nice to have, but not essential. Hate to disagree with previous posts, but I would not recommend Hummingbird, unless you want repeated failures and warranty claims. Lowrance sounders are far more reliable and less likely to suffer corrosion issues, which are common on kayaks, especially those used at sea. I have used both brands. 4 lowrance units, 1 HB. No problems ever with any Lowrance unit. That single hummingbird went back for service 3 times before I gave up on it. A mate of mine sent his back 7 times. I'd never buy one for a kayak ever again. |

you don't need one. if you learn to read the water, you will know where the fish are hiding. i us my ff for depth so i know when i have to be careful with the mirage drive. eagle 350 combo is a nice cheap good unit. |

I depend on my fish finder not for finding fish, but learning the contours and shape of the structure I am fishing over. Without knowing them, you are stuck with working with only what you can see from above. If you do use it for fish, it will usually be finding bait balls that are deep and they will indeed be important to your success. I used Lowrance for four decades and now use HB exclusively now for exactly the same reason the previous poster gave for his using Lowrance. I got a bad product which I can certainly forgive after years of good products, but not bad customer service or outright arrogance. I suspect you can get by with whatever looks good to you and fits your budget. Both make very good products, I just got burned by bad customer service and got hard headed. I have Humminbird side imaging on my pro angler for a little over two years and couldn't be happier. Before that I had very good luck with both Eagle and Lowrance traditional fish finders. High definition and color sure help when you are in direct sunlight what ever you get. Best of luck, Phill |
