Outback Fish Finder & Transducer mount option

I needed a way to mount the transducer so I could remove it easily for my other boat so this is how I chose to mount the transducer after hours of perusing the kayak blogs. I mounted the transducer between the bow and closer to the mast tube. I used a 3 inch PVC fitting and a rubber clean out cap available at any plumbing supply. I used Marine Goop to attach the fitting to the inside hull of the yak. It leveled out beautifully with no bubbles! Then I attached the transducer to the rubber cap with SS screws and nylock nuts. I put the hose clamp on the PVC fitting to show me how far to push the cap down so the transducer would sit in the lower middle of the PVC. I made a small X with a razor knife to push the transducer wire out through the cap. Fill the PVC with water and attach the cap and you're good to go.

How's the screen clarity compared with direct water contact?

I have used a suction cup mount underneath with good success but I want a cleaner install. I tried the glue-shoot-thru-hull method but the noise on the screen was not what I could live with.

Clever method for placement. One caveat: If the transducer is too close to the Mirage drive so that the fins are within the 'cone' of the transducer signal, they can interfere with the return signal and mess up the display.

That is why I put it as far away from the drive forward as I dared before the nose of the boat slopes upward. My friend's boat has it right behind the mast post towards the drive and his works fine. Took it out on a test run today while crabbing and it leaked water out of the cup. Worked fine in the garage! Put some more Goop on it and will give it a go next week.

Plan B. I needed a removable setup so I can use it in my Mad River Explorer canoe with a Scotty 241 Combination Side or Deck Mount installed. Pipe length is perfect for both!

Painted with some Krylon Fusion Blue and works great!



Transducer can be swiveled up out of the way for put in and take out.



Pipe clamp limits rotation so Transducer won't go past this point.



Scotty flush mount 244 and Scotty 272 Post Bracket. Bungie keeps the Scotty from coming out.

Hey SF Harry thanks for taking the time to post this. Very interesting set up - has given me some great ideas. As far as the Pbase site goes when I follow the link to Transducer install it says the gallery is empty. All your other galleries are there, any reason for this?

In the first photo you can see the head unit, a Humminbird 170, mounted on a Scotty 244 flush mount. The battery is a 7AH rechargeable bungied to the mast post in the forward hatch. The wires are velcro strapped to some pad eyes. I don't really feel any drag but the arm does make a little noise cutting through the water. Its easily swung up and out if you're running silent.
