Just bought a lowrance elite 5 ( non DI). I was looking at the scupper mount kit but dont wanna give up the rear scupper that i use for my cart. Has anyone mounted thru the hull and still had good results. Also i know the twmp will be off? to what exent and does thru the hull mess up the reading any? thanks

I just got a HumminBird 597ci HD DI Combo. It shot through the hull perfectly well in normal and DI modes - until the poorly installed puck got a leak. There will be no issue shooting through the hull with your Lowrance unit.

I did not check the temp accuracy against a regular thermometer. However, I have read that folks have found it to be pretty accurate.

Good luck!

With a through hull installation, you can expect up to a 2 degree temp difference in normal conditions. In extreme heat, the initial reading can be significantly off due to hull temps during transport.

I have recently bought a Lowrance Elite 4 DSI - I guess it has the same transducer.

My previous unit's transducer was mounted to shoot thru the hull. Can anyone advise whether or not this will work OK for the DSI unit and if I do will the signal be materially weaker and the on screen information materially less than I would have got with an 'in water' installation?(after spending all that $ I want to get the best results I can :P )

For DSI, the through-hull installation will work fine. I kayak with a fellow Hobie Revolution owner that has the same Elite 4 DSI unit and he loves it. Perfect readings.

Where a through hull would not work is for the Humminbird SST (Side Scan Technology), because it has to be physically in the water to "see" the 160-180 degrees to each side of the transducer.

I agree with H_Y . My HB 597ci hd combo works great. Beautiful images down to 140' (deepest I have been) so far. I have a PhD in Electrical Engineering, trust me when I tell you it works great (read extremely anal retentive). DSI and DI transducers will be more sensitive to a poor install, but if you use a water type install (some type of ring to hold water with the transducer sitting in it pressed against the hull you will be fine. Expect a few dB of loss. If you are using the unit at the edge of its capabilities you will see a 10 to 20' reduction of good signal in hundreds of feet of water. Otherwise protect the transducer inside the hull.

Heck, even he Hobie mounting hardware uses a piece of plastic (seems kind of lke the hull) to protect the transducer. How bad can it be to shoot through plastice.
