Is it just me, or a gear problem from Hobie? Fishfinder kit arrived this AM. The Remco battery will NOT fit into the opening. Nor will my other 12V portables.

You are talking about the foam block?

Nothing has changed here. Just tested one. Tight fit, but should be. Worst case... cut a little foam away, but you really want it tight.

Just checked again. Maybe it was cut on a Monday morning? Or late Friday afternoon?

Not a huge deal. Will slice and dice. Just thought you might want to check --- and you did.

This is a die cut part I believe. How far off is it?

Good morning Matt,

Yes, this is the die-cut battery holder foam unit. Since it is die-cut, to me that means mine is probably not an anomaly. There is no way a battery would fit in there without considerable carving.

As a Hobie Team member, I take a great deal of pride in my association. I know Hobie would not be happy to have folks order a pony and get the poo instead. I have 2 Sports, one Outback, a PA and a PA12. In the rest of our houseboat crew are two more Outbacks. When we launch off our houseboat at Powell it looks like the Normandy invasion, truely a Plastic Navy.

I am shipping the part back to you this morning so that you may take a close look yourself. I don't need a replacement as I have another system to use. What is your mailing address so it comes direct to you?

The battery measures 5 7/8" x 2 1/2" The foam opening is 5 15/16" x 2 1/2"

I can't see the problem. I can only assume you have something different from the foam and battery shown above. They are a snug fit, but net on both length and width.

The foam is very stiff and will take a "set" which loosens the fit, so they have to be snug to start.

Did you fit before gluing into the hull? Did the foam distort if glued into an uneven spot?

I suppose I can imagine foam shrinking maybe? Aged, in sun. Who knows? Not something we have heard of and certainly not requiring carving to make them fit. Something is wrong here.

Hi Matt,

Problem resolved. We live at 8500 feet five miles out into the country. Our driveway is a mile long. The FedX guy gets to us last, at the end of a long day. The Fishfinder Install Kit, along with other items I had on order were probably in the back of his truck all day, plus may have been in his vehicle overnight as sometimes they load up the night before. Then, he probbaly delivered it just at dark here. We were gone, so our arrangment is for them to set packages on the back deck. We didn't get home until about ten PM. In California, no problem. In Colorado at something below zero all day for a couple days, the foam contracted and was like a brick. It had zero stretch or give.

I thought about this possibility and kept it in my warm office for a couple days. Yep! Snug, but gives enough for a great fit, just like the other four I have set up on the other Hobies.

Sorry for the confusion, but now you have an answer if you get a similar call from say the Colorado or Wyoming high country in mid-winter! As always, I appreciate the Hobie service folks for timely response.
