Another video for you guys. Caught a halibut that came up totally green and then...well you'll see....

aaand that's why when you gaff em, you put them in the boat first before worrying about removing tackle or storing the fish (stringer in your case). heh I was expecting him to get away honestly.

Uh...Yeah...I appreciate your opinion about getting the fish in the boat first...and that may be true for most fish...but certainly not halibut in my opinion. Those halibut are freakishly strong and very unpredictable. You pull a halibut onto your lap, it could freak out, break all your rods, wipe your fishfinder off your kayak, slap you in the face...and get away.

What you didn't see in the video is after it was secured it was bled and subdued with several hard whacks to the head by a bat. If you don't subdue them first....baaaaaad things can happen...and just because they look dead doesn't mean that they are...like I said unpredictable, and dangerous. But sure as hell fun to watch!

No disrespect was meant man, it was fun to watch!
Plus you're right, I have not had the halibut experience since most of my fishing is in Caribbean waters. I was trying to draw a parallel between gaffing Mahi and Kingfish and your catch.

About like trying to boat a cobia... best to smack them in the head with a hammer first. Story of one guy that reversed the process, while the cobia was systematically taking his boat apart from the inside out, he was flailing away with a hammer... never actually hit the cobia but punched enough holes in the bottom of the boat with his hammer that the boat sunk out from under him and his cobia swam away..

A better placed gaff would have made it easier. I've boated hundreds of halibut; you got in a hurry and made it harder than it needed to be. Slow down and take your time. Like the old joke of the young bull and the old bull standing on top a hill over looking a heard of cows...young bull wants to run down and screw one..old bull says lets walk down and screw them all.

Halibut are crazy strong. Big ones can injure people. This isn't very big (I'm 6' 3", this is ~70# fish), but on a kayak would be much more of a challenge:

For halibut from the kayak I really like the shark hook on a length of rope. Add a buoy for really big fish. Here is a video of me landing a 45ish pound pacific halibut from my kayak.
