I know this is an old thread but some great ideas. Might check my lowrance ready plate next time!

This thread was an awesome read. Yeah, sand has no bearing on a transducer signal. I got a bridge I can sell you in Chelsea, MA too.

When you launch from the beach and you have sand like this in the transducer plate, you will not get a signal. Nothing you can do about it except modify the plate. Flushing a hose was absolutely useless as the sand was picked up while launching from the surf. As others have shown, cutting out the hobie transducer plate was my solution in 2014 and will have to do it again on the Revo I am rigging now.

Why does the transducer bottom have to be just off the plastic as in a space between the transducer and the plastic? Is that just to keep it from taking. beating or is there a reason for it?

O.K. found the answer. It's for the transducer to contact the water.

Updated advice on Lowrance Ready cover plates concerning sand.

We also believe that sand has little to no effect on the signal, but it is easily avoided without modifying the plate.

The big issue is if sand or mud are allowed to dry and harden in the cavity during storage between sessions. The next time you go out this material may not easily flush out on it's own.

To prevent an issue... Simply flush the cavity with water from a hose or bucket by directing the flow down the scupper hole after fishing. It will easily clear when wet.

Simply maintenance.

If you are concerned about sand that may have entered the plate area during a launch and not cleared, the natural surge of water in and out of the area should clear it as you move through the water. If you aren't sure... pour some water down the scupper.
If getting a sufficient volume of water down the scupper is too complicated, another option is to backflush the transducer pocket. Simply pedal in reverse for a bit, either with the MD180 drive or by pulling the older drive and dropping it back into the well in reverse. This is a pretty simple move when heading out and seems to clear loose sand pretty well.
