Then why do guys keep breaking them?

Simply because there are tens of thousands of MirageDrives made every year. There were a LOT of cranks used during that period.

So there are tens of thousands of out of spec drive arms currently being used. Will hobie preemptively warranty arms from that period or do we have to wait for them to fail?
FYI the weight difference for stock vs solid arms is less than 4 oz per arm.

The cranks are well out of warranty by this time. If not... we will replace. The fact is, only a small percentage actually failed, so the potential is actually quite small.

We believe that pedal cranks are no longer an issue.

Has this proven true since it was posted back in 2014?

I just broke one on my 2015 AI.

I'm 76 years old and can barely walk.... so I do not see an over-use/abuse issue.

viz: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP ... JaRW5TYzBR

The same crank is also cracked on the pedal end - although not as badly.

Mine broke two days ago, right where the pedal attached on my 2014 i14T. Do I take it to the local dealer to see about getting a replacement shaft? I wrote Hobie and called and have not received a response. I want something that will last and may just replace all 4 shafts as getting stuck paddling on a long excursion will kill me...or my wife will.

Yes, your dealer is the starting point.

A kayaker in the Pacific Northwest is manufacturing solid pedal arms. Check out ... It may be too late ...
I bought an el-cheapo drill press and some 6067 stock and made my own.

Have not used them yet... so the whole thing may go down in flames...

As you can see from that thread, there are a lot of Hobie owners who, like you, have broken multiple pedal arms.
I may know the root cause of my own breakages.

There is a press fit of the pedal shaft into the crank arm.

The whole arm does not get pressed: just a reduced-diameter nubbin.

On mine, the nubbins appear to have sheared off and the torque of pedaling with the pedal shaft flopping around in the arm simply cracked the arm.... of course, that begs the question of why the other end or the arms also cracked... but I do not think it is too far a reach to speculate that there might be some imbalance of forces brought on by the pedal arm's working loose.
