I've read up and seen some photos and discussions about putting the square hatch on the new outbacks. There is an issue with the white tub fitting all the way down into the bottom of the hatch. The tub seems to hit the inside floor before it clears all the way down into the hatch.

I also noticed that since the hatch is so wide, when sitting down in the outback and trying to open up the hatch you really needed to move your legs out wide and spread quite a bit in order to raise the lid up.

Here's an solution to solve both those issues....

Install the hatch vertically instead of horizontal...

Both the square tub AND the black tackle rack will both work this way. And to open the hatch door, i really only need to move one leg to the side and can easily open the hatch to get inside. The width of the hatch doesn't affect my footing when standing up either. Its the same width of the circular one that comes standard in the boat.

Forgive me for the lack of cleanliness in the yak, but that is what happens when u stalk redfish in 6 inches of water.

I also went ahead and changed out the side pockets. I replaced the standard ones with these rubber ones. Less tangling issues and more stretch for more storage. Inexpensive but effective mod.

Here's some pics!

Nothing better than a well used/loved Outback!

Looks great. The tub doesn't fit in 2 of the 3 PA17 hatches either...though I won't be attempting this mod lol! Nicely done

I asked about this idea but didn't get any reply: http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=52769#p245229

I'm glad it's fit fine...

Do you want to sell your old round hatch assembly?

Let me know....thanks

Nice job SBienvenu, good post. I'll be following your lead. Picking up a Demo 2015 Outback but can't have it until end of Aug. ~ if it isn't too beat up.
