I mount my battery there as well and I use a longer lead with a Genius quick connect, I carry a spare battery in the front hatch just in case and can easily plug it in on the water. My 7" chirp is a power hog and I can't imagine the newer units with structure scan have any better battery life. I get about a day and a half running the 7" chirp and a Elite 4 GPS on my 9.6 ah LiFe-PO4 battery. They are likely the safest chemistry of the Lithium-based batteries, they can be left fully charged without puffing and can handle more cycles than a LiPo.
