Post subject:  Transducer Install for a Garmin Striker4
I just bought this fishfinder and would like to know if I can install the transducer in the hull. The Striker4 does not have a side view. The box has a photo of an in hull install using the included rubber pad. The pad is basically a plain piece of rubber, although the one shown has a cut out for the transducer. I have an older Revolution w/o the transducer space.
Can I just glue it down with some marine goop, or something else ?

I basically am clueless on this one.

After reading a few threads here, and watching a few u-tube installs, I'll be going with DUCT SEAL...it looks like a very simple install, and can be easily removed or repositioned if necessary. And no bubble issues...

amazing, but I can't find a place that carries a 1 pound block of duct seal anyplace around here. Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware.....nothing.......looks like Amazon once again..

Have you looked in the electrical department of Home Depot?
That is where Duct seal is carried as;

I'm thinking about placing the transducer inside of a 3 or 4 inch tall PVC tube, secured by the duct seal.
Being in rough water on occasion I was thinking this would assist in keep the water surrounding the transducer.
Good idea ?

If the transducer is mounted where the hull comes out of the water, having the transducer mounted as you are considering won't help.

For the best performance, the transducer needs to have/be in good contact with the hull it's shooting through.
On my first Hobie, a 2010 Outback, I initially mounted my transducer to the hull using marine goop......it worked, but I thought the signal was somewhat attenuated.
I removed the transducer and found there were bubbles/air pockets between the hull and the transducer. At this juncture, I used Duct Seal and there was an immediate improvement to performance.

When all is said and done, having the transducer mounted directly in the water is the best method, following by using Duct Seal.....using the PVC tube would be a good method too as long as the transducer is close to or in direct contact with the hull....surrounded by water.

In the water is definitely the best. If your going to use Marine Goop or some other silicone I found that if you cut the bottom off the tube you can squeeze one large mass of the marine goop out in a way that does not need smoothing, and creates no bubbles. Then you just press the transducer into goop until it makes contact with the hull of the kayak. Trying to create a smooth bubble free pile of marine goop squeezing it from the little toothpaste size opening in the top is nearly impossible.

I have never tried the Duct Seal, though I have seen a quite a few videos with people who swear by it.

I put this together with some old PVC I had laying around. I'll secure it with duct seal and see how it works.

I am interested to understand exactly how this is going to work. Are you going to duct seal the PVC to the inside of the hull and then fill it with water? I am easily confused, would like to see pictures of the final install.

That is JohsYak plan.
This technique has been used by several kayak fishing guys over the last 6 years that I am aware of.
You need to make sure the tube has water covering the transducer.

Yes...that is (or was) my plan....before starting the install I made one last stop at my local kyak dealer.
I ended up buying the last 2015 Revolution they had !! So, now I need to buy a Lowrance.
The Garmin will go to my nephew who owns a small boat.

The upgraded seat was my biggest reason. It's like sitting in a lawn chair. The Lowrance ready install is a bonus.
My 2014 Revo is now up for sale....

It's exactly how commercial vessels install commercial transducers inside the hull. They have a braised to the hull stand pipe with a threaded cap, usually made from brass. The transducer is attached to the cap and the pipe is filled with a light weight oil (special oil).

And exactly why am I here might you ask...I bet Dr.SteelheadCatcher knows ;)
