We recently bought a Hobie Mirage Outback used. About a 2005 to 2009, not sure. It has sort of a two level hull. The lower portion being narrower than the top portion. My wife is too light to make the kayak sink all the way into the water to the level of the upper, wider hull. This makes it tip from side to side as she progresses. Are we doing something wrong (stupid)? Or did we buy the wrong unit? Your help will be most appreciated. |

I wonder if the mirage drive is adjusted so your wife is "not reaching or stretching" while she pedals the kayak...that would make her tend to rock more side to side. If the pedal adjustment is correct, then concentrate on a easy pedaling cadence and the more its used, the better your balance becomes. It's not necessary to use a "full pedal stroke" to move the kayak.....in fact, short, quick pedal strokes will start the kayak moving more quickly, from a dead stop, than longer strokes. |

It's okay if the kayak "tips" from side to side. In fact, it'll be faster that way. You'll get used to it. |

Most likely it's a pre 2007 hull. The 2009+ hulls are significantly flatter across the bottom. Also, you may want to get a hobie Sport, instead. It's essentially a shorter version of the outback. Either should fix the rocking problem. The hull on the right is the older outback version.

Some ballast in the front and back should solve the problem. Water bags or empty gallon milk cartons are easiest, as they can be filled and emptied right at the water. Depending on how petite she is, you may need upwards of 50 lb. None of the other models seem to have that problem.

The serial number will tell you the year it was built I believe. One of the numbers but I don’t remember off the top of my head which one. |

I had a girl once who wheighed 90 pounds and bought an Outback off me she found a bucket of water added inside solved her see-saw problem. If you do get her a new kayak dont get a sport. Look at the revo 11 or the Compass. |

Depending on her size, Sport would be my first choice. Get the smallest/lightest Hobie that accomplishes the needs. |
