The cons' 1. Kinda weird design in that if you shut the power off the water backflows out. Its a simple design flaw (I think) Hobie's solution is a little lame. A black plastic/rubber plug when I shut off the pump. First the plug eventually will get lost Next contorting my body to actually plug the pump on the open water does not feel really safe. I added a threaded PVC elbow with a MIPS fitting (3/4in) and added a couple of inches of tubing. Basically just bringing the intake up off the deck of the livewell. In addition, since the water is pouring/sprayed in it is also being aerated so the bait like that too. Problem solved It probably cost me less than a dollar to mod. I'm not sure why Hobie would not have included this simple solution For $250 + tax I was a little disappointed 2. Tested it out on Sunday 5/4 @ Cabrillo where another Hobie yakker also had a brand new one, neither one of us could get the self-prime to work. Suck suck blow doesn't count as self-prime Examining the livewell afterward I discovered the scooper is pointing backwards, at least on mine. The scooper is screwed in place on the scooper tube. So I can't adjust that end. The opposite end the tubing seems to have almost been glued to the tube and won't budge. Once attached to the livewell overscrewing the fitting just knocks it off the threads. I'm not sure how to fix. Would I buy another, you bet. The pros: comes with battery and charger super water-proof connector with gaskets 3 rod holders kewl custom carve out for battery holder overall simple plug and play and holds LOTS OF BAIT MikeG |

When I cut the intake tube down to bring my scoop closer to the bottom of the yak I accidently put my scoop on backwards. I just took the screw out and grabbed the end of the scoop and bent the plastic tube, rotated it and bent the tube again and did this a couple of times. The plastic tube will break away from the scoop and you just pull it out, turn it around, and re-screw it in facing the proper direction. Self prime will work then if you get the yak moving forward a little bit. |

The only "self priming" feature on the LiveWell is the Atwood pump. That is what they call it. I have removed reference to self priming from future catalogs. The instructions state that forward motion in the kayak is required to get water flowing up the tube... with the scoop forward of course. You should be able to spin the intake scoop into the forward direction. Not going to work facing aft. The design was intended to have the pump running at all times to keep the water fresh, so holding water was not an intended purpose... therefore the little caps for those that want that. |

"running at all times" 2 issues with running at all times A lot of kayakers cycle running time either manually or automatically with a timer to extend the length of battery use. So your saying I can't cycle ? Secondly, what if the battery does die. Am I done fishing ? The water being fresh could "PROBABLY" support "SOME" bait without harm for 30 - 45 min max. Under current conditions I 've got an inch of water left in 2 minutes after shutoff. Maybe I'm wrong and its not a problem. As a customer I thought it was and even developed a simple solution Sorry |

My understanding is that the battery can drive the pump for 8-9 hours. Don't get me wrong... I love the solution you came up with. |

I've actually made a mod to the mod. At the end of the tube I added another elbow so the water shoots down and not up onto the cables |

What about installing a check valve? Something to prevent the tank from emptying when pump is shut down/dies. I don't have the tank, so I don't know the feasibility of this suggestion. To me, though if the pump is off, and the tank does in fact drains, this doesn't seem like a good thing for bait or catch. |
