We are taking a break from the cold and wet Pacific Northwest winter by exploring the desert southwest looking for kayak fishing opportunities.

It's nice to have such beautiful weather in December. There's plenty of kayak fishing potential around here and not too many fishermen.

We need to refine our lure collection a bit to switch from smallmouth to largemouth bass fishing, but I did manage to get a decent largemouth bass within an hour of launching the kayak.

We are going to be doing a lot of exploring and a lot of kayak fishing so I'll post photos and videos when I can. You can keep track of the fishing adventures on my blog. Internet access and phone coverage can be sketchy, but I'll post when I come into town for supplies.

Awesome images....you did great work.

The water level is so low that fishing is pretty much over until some snow starts melting. If I was living in the southwest United States that uses Colorado River water, millions of people, I would be pretty nervous. If it weren't for a water sharing agreement with Mexico, there would probably be no lower Colorado River at all.

With the never ending desert wind, sometimes the only time to go kayak fishing at night.

Desert mornings can be as spectacular as ocean sunsets.

This was the best largemouth bass by far in two days of fishing. The low river water level and increased water flow has disrupted what passes for a natural environment in and around the river.

The last post here was in the beginning of December 2022. That's a long time to go without fishing, especially since under what used to be "normal" circumstances, we would have gone kayak fishing dozens of times, maybe more. Things are not "normal" any longer. This winter, the fishing on the lower Colorado River has been just about nonexistent, first due to the extreme low water levels in the Colorado River itself due to the critical lack of water. A record number of extreme weather events on the west coast has temporarily restored this part of the river's water. The key word here is "temporary". The Colorado River is in big trouble.

The main killer of the kayak fishing has been the wind. The Sonoran desert is not a calm place, but over the past three winters, the increase in the amount and velocity has been apparent to everyone. This winter, there has been wind over 10-15 mph every day without a break. 20-30 mph days were common. Wind events would last days at a time, the wind never dropping into the single digits, even at night. Kayak fishing was not even remotely possible for weeks at a time, then months at a time. If this wind trend continues, living here will be very difficult, forget about fishing.

For the first time since last December, we finally got out on the river. Of course, the fishing was great and the river actually had some water in it. Could not help but think how much good fishing was blown away by the relentless desert wind.

Here's the first fish of 2023

Had to yank this big largemouth bass out of the reeds in the blinding sun

The winter season here is almost over, hope to go fishing a few more times, but I don't know...

The endless desert wind continues to prevent fishing on this part of the Colorado River. Too bad, because when we can get out on the river, the fishing has been great.

The water level in the Colorado River is the highest it has been in five years. Unfortunately, that is a temporary situation.

Image

Largemouth bass were not biting at night but the striped bass were.

Image

The largemouth bass start biting as the sun comes up.

Image

A lot of questions about the future of fishing here.

A few great days of kayak fishing on the Colorado River to wind up a dismal winter fishing season. Low river water levels and endless wind have wiped out months of potential fishing. The fishing was excellent these few days, but we leave wondering about the fishing here. The increasing wind and Colorado River crisis are a lot to worry about.

Contrary to rumors, I have not been captured by PacNW militia and am back kayak fishing for largemouth bass on the Colorado River, where the water level is low and the milfoil has taken over.

Image

It has been extremely hot and windy. All the kayak fishing is done in the early morning before the sun and wind come up.

Managed to pick off a nice fish here and there.
