Great kayak fishing for largemouth bass on the Colorado River. How's this for a good morning of bass fishing? Lots of nice fish and plenty of kayak fishing action. |

More great kayak fishing for largemouth bass on the Colorado River. Our kayak fishing adventures here in the desert southwest are almost over so we are going fishing every chance we can. Night fishing has been good Early morning a pretty good time of day for kayak fishermen The calm desert mornings have been few and far between It's worth getting up early if you want to catch fish This big bass could barely jump after a long fight Another early morning with only the local wildlife, mostly mosquitoes, for company Plenty of kayak fishing action and nice largemouth bass |

For the second season in a row, the fishing on the Columbia River has sucked about as bad as it can suck. Buying a fishing license to fish the Columbia is looking more and more like a bad investment. Not the case for the Colorado River. The river may run dry from all the major cities draining the water, but as long as there is water in the river, it appears the fish will bite. Hot and calm kayak fishing conditions. Just like on the Columbia River, aquatic vegetation is choking out the Colorado River as well. Dodging desert thunderstorms chasing largemouth bass. Early morning kayak fishing action. Hot autumn days and hot kayak fishing for largemouth bass. |

As the waning moon rose just ahead of the desert sun, the conditions were perfect for kayak fishing. We explored as much of the Colorado River backwater as we could get to looking for hungry largemouth bass. The globs of seaweed and hungry mosquitoes made for challenging fishing, but there was some great kayak fishing action. As I stood on a hill overlooking the Colorado River, on a hill in the distance, a desert bighorn sheep made itself comfortable looking at the river. After a long, hot summer, it must have looked pretty good. Nearby fires caused by lightning made for some smoky desert sunrises. I lost several fish that got tangled up in the seaweed but managed to steer a few through the weeds and into the kayak. |

Kayak fishing under a full moon. Once you get used to the moonlight, you don't need to use a light. The fishing has been a little slow. I suspect the underwater vegetation choking the waterways has something to do with it. Still a few fish to be found. The conditions are ideal except for the 20-30mph desert wind. |

Underwater vegetation and dropping river water levels are making for tough conditions, fishing wise. Too bad because weather conditions are perfect. Still a few nice fish to be caught, but mostly smaller ones Even if the fishing sucks, it's still nice to be out on the water |

Due to relentless desert winds that have been regularly over 20mph, the appearance of the invasive milfoil aquatic vegetation and the draining of the Colorado River to supply water to the drought stricken American southwest, it has been a terrible fishing season here on the lower Colorado River. We managed to scrape out a few nice fish during the few hours of calm wind each week, but the early 2022 fishing season could not be considered anything less than a complete blow out. The dust devil was a frequent visitor About as big a fish as we've been able to catch Invasive aquatic milfoil. Blankets every square centimeter of water up to 20 feet deep. Grows amazingly fast and can only be killed by poison. Will there be fishing here next year? I would say it's 50-50 at best. Once the milfoil spreads throughout the lower Colorado basin, fishing will be impossible. |

The challenging kayak fishing conditions continue on the lower Colorado River in the desert southwest. Very windy with only a few hours a week calm enough for kayak fishing. The fishing has not been good all winter. Like good fishermen everywhere, we always think tomorrow will be a great day of fishing, no matter how bad it's been for the past few months. The largemouth bass are hiding deep in the shallow water reeds of the Colorado River. They are tough to get out. Still a few nice fish around but they are not jumping into the kayak, that's for sure. The fishing here will be over in a couple more weeks as aquatic vegetation, which is growing at an amazing rate, blankets all the water up to twenty feet deep. Hoping for a few more days of fishing. |

The winter kayak fishing adventures have come to an end. It's been a bit of an off year with windy weather and low water in the Colorado River. We still had a great time kayak fishing, as we always do, and like last year, caught the biggest fish of the season on one of the last fishing trips. Hopefully, there will still be water in the Colorado River next winter and we'll give it another shot. |
