Post subject:  Florida Tarpon from a Hobie

One of our local FCKA yak fishers, Mike (capncrunch), just returned from Anclote Key along the West Coast of Florida (near Tarpon Springs) after catching a 5-foot tarpon. As he was preparing to release it, a 9-foot shark attacked the tarpon several times directly beneath his yak, even elevating the yak in the process. As Mike said, it was a bittersweet catch, since the tarpon did not survive the attack. It took Mike about 35 minutes to leader touch, but he said it was easier than expected to get it alongside his Revo. Here are his comments re catching a tarpon from his Hobie Mirage drive yak.

"This tarpon was not that difficult to land. I felt in control for most of the time. I could direct him in a certain direction by giving slack. If it started to head out to sea I would turn the yak sideways and pull hard. That would stop him and turn him."
WTG, Mike!

Too bad about loosing the fish to a shark. Not one would expect or hope for. Glad it didn't decide to go for that other 13.5 foot yellow fish....or a dangling leg.

Nice pictures
