If you're going to make your own sail rig why not design it as a roller furling set up. That way you could reef the sail in stronger winds or let her out when the wind dies down.

| Post subject: | Sail for a new outfitter |
I'm going to try to make a sail for my new outfitter, and I'm wondering if it should have a little more sail area. It would be easy to add 20% or 30% (a little taller and wider). Would this make it unstable and hard to keep from tipping over or do you think it would be manageable? I have never sailed a hobie. Any comments and advise would be appreciated. Thanks |

I like the general simplicity of the orignal Hobie design (I'm lazy), just thought a little bigger might be better

jryak, I tried to get a post up yesterday, but it did not take for some reason. Several folks (including Hobie) have been working on re-designing the standard Hobie sail to make it larger, especially for use on the Adventure. However, a larger BigA sail would probably be perfect for the Outfitter as well. KFS has an excellent sailing forum with lots of interesting ideas. Especially check out the KFS Sailing Master's (punchinello) posts on his increased surface area sails for his Sport, including a bowsprit and jib! http://kfs.infopop.cc/groupee/forums/a/ ... 2191009851 Here is a pic of his rig. 
And here, showing his ama, or outrigger. He has also re-designed the rudder to increase its surface area for better performance when under sail.

Apalach, Thanks for the info and link. Looks like I will try a bigger TYVEK sail before making the final one. At this stage I'm not planning on an outrigger (at least not until getting dumped over in cold water). -jryak |
