Post subject:  Beginner questions; sailing lessons? larger rudder?

Hello everyone, I will be ordering an Adventure this spring and I have a couple sailing questions;

1. I've never sailed anything in my life, do I need to take sailing lessons to successfully sail my new boat? or...... Can I just get out there, point the boat in the direction I want to go and tighten the sail. (If the direction I want to go is directly into the wind I have to point (tack?) to one side or the other and zig-zag my way there.)

2. I can see the usefulness of the dagger board and will include it in my order, but do I also need the larger rudder.

Can't wait to get it, I'm just saving my bucks and trying to decide on a color.

First off, congrats on picking a great way to start sailing. You do not need sailing lessons for the type of sailing you will be doing. It is very easy and you should have no trouble getting started. It sounds like you have been doing some research on sailing so that should be good enough.

A dagger board would be a great idea to have if you want to sail with your adventure. As for the rudder, it would help with steering especially in higher winds, but may not be necessary.

I will have to WARN you with a big problem with the Hobie line of yaks and cats. Once you experience sailing with one you will be hooked for life! Then you will be forced to go out and buy a Getaway :wink: or a Hobie 16 :wink: :wink: . Just thought I'd warn ya before it was too late.

This is one of the greatest things about sailing on a Hobie Mirage kayak! Anyone can do it. If you have trouble...you just pedal home! If you can't tack...you pedal through. If there is no wind...you pedal. They are great entry level sailboats.

Greg,
First off, a hearty welcome to the Hobie Board! With regard to starting saiing, follow Option # 1 in your post--just climb aboard, point it downwind and you are sailing! You might want to check some of my posts about the Harken blocks that will increase your control of the mainsheet significantly, but other than than that , just do it . Have a blast!
Best,
Dick

Noticed that the dagger board in the up position still hangs down quite a bit.

Can you easily insert it when underway in slightly deeper water?

Well, I got my boat and I'm sitting in it, in my living room as I type this. It looks great! I have the sail up (double high space in the living room) and I'm making wind and surf noises. (OK you know you did it too) I did get a couple pulleys for the mainsheet like Dick suggested, much better! (Although it took me a few google searches to figure out that a Harken block is just a pulley, sailors have a different name for everything!)

My first modifications will be;
-An internal bungee for the two piece mast, like they have on tent poles, don't want to drop half my mast into the drink. Possible a float to the base as well.
-Some kind of modified lashing for the rolled-up sail to the side of the boat, the paddle holder is tough to use. Has anyone modified this?

That's all for now, can't wait to git it a try. Greg
