I saw a Hobie Mirage Outback SUV rigged for sailing in an airport and fell in love. I must have one but I can't decide which model. Which model of Mirage is the best for sailing? |

I have owned and sailed both the Outback and Adventure. The Adventure wins hands down mainly due to the daggerboard which is far more efficient than using the Mirage sails only as a keel. I have purchased but yet to try the large rudder for the Adventure. Im confident from what people are saying it will only get better. Good luck with your decision!! |

Booligal, Thank you very much for the reply. I'm leaning towards the Classic due to the reduced weight (50 lbs). The Sport weighs about the same (48 lbs) but I suspect the reduced length is detrimental to sailing performance. I really like the Adventure too (59 lbs). I wish I could demo them all. I'm 5'11" and 200 lbs. Any other thoughts? |

I'm getting some conflicting information: According to the Hobie Sail Kit brochure the Sail Kit works on all Mirage models. However, I've heard from two dealers that the Sail Kit does not work on the Classic. Can someone from Hobie comment please? All other comments welcome too. Thanks to all! |

That is correct. The sail kit does not fit the Classic. We had hoped for an adapter at one point, but that never worked out. |

Thanks to everyone for the responses. What a great forum. Where does the daggerboard go in the Adventure? Does it replace the Mirage drive? If not, one could have the daggerboard, the Mirage drive AND an oversized rudder to offer lateral resistance! Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts appreciated. I've now ruled out the Classic because it can't be sailed (it was previously my first choice). |

The dagger board has its own slot molded in to the Adventure. You can use the dagger, ST Turbo fins and the larger rudder for best lateral resistance. |

And the daggerboard is one sweet piece of equipment...nice to have a bit of fibreglass around all that plastic!!

mradclif asked: "Where does the daggerboard go in the Adventure? Does it replace the Mirage drive?" Here's a pic of the BigA daggerboard with its sheath posing on the deck of an Outback. 
And here is the BigA daggerboard slot molded into the hull to the right of the Mirage drive well, with the plug pulled and up on deck. This was a pretty ingenious solution to the problem, since you now have a dedicated daggerboard to greatly increase stability and prevent side-slipping while sailing, but still retaining all the advantages and usefulness of the Mirage drive fins for additional stability, plus being able to pump the pedals a few times while coming about so you can get back on a reach in short order. Very nice.

New to the forum but old to sailing kayaks. My Klepper Aerius II had a lee board system that attached to the cockpit rails. I'll bet apalach can make one in an hour for $50 in parts less the cost of the boards themselves. Removable of course. Upwind sailing would be more of a "breeze" with or without the elegant outriggers. The Aerius was 17' and a real handfull solo sailing until you get your wind legs. anasasi Sacramento, CaliFUNia (just up the street from stocktondon) |

Hobie is coming out with a new sailing kayak. I believe it's called a Mirage Adventure Island. It's got outriggers and a sailing rig much like the hobie wave, it furls around the mast. Should be avail. later this year. Check w/ your local dealer. |

Hurray! I just placed an order for my Adventure Island. I tried the standard Adventure with sail kit this week-end, but the Island is only about $500 more than the standard Adventure with sail kit, turbo fins, large rudder, daggerboard, and floats. I can't wait  (but I'll have to as the yak won't be delivereed until October  )
