Post subject: | Newbie Question - Adventure "Enhanced Rudder" |
Just over a week ago, we took delivery of two new Adventures with sail kits and daggerboards. I have briefly sailed it with the dagger board in a 5-10 knot breeze and everything seemed to work very well - I love it!. In the community forum, I see frequent reference to the "enhanced rudder" and would appreciate some advice, e.g. 1. What wind/current/wave conditions make this enhancement necessary? or is it just a "nice to have" item? 2. Is it featured in the catalog as the "81397001 Large Twist-n-Stow Rudder Blade"? (I want to make sure I order the right item). 3. Any problems installing it? Maintaining it? 4. Approx how much is it? Is it worth the $$$? And any other advice or tips anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks, Randy |

yes it is the large twist and stow rudder it is $22.95 and is easy to install. It is not a must have but is very nice, everyone who has one loves it!! it will be just as easy to maintain as the standard rudder! |

Post subject: | Large blade |
The larger blade does require more effort to raise and lower, but is better for steerage when sailing. |

Thanks Brad and Matt - For $22.95 it's a no-brainer from a cost standpoint. My only remaining question is whether or not the larger blade adds stress to the rest of the rudder system (similar to what I have read with respect to adding the Turbo fins). Since Brad briefly addressed my previous maintenance question, I will assume it does not. Thanks again, Randy |

The large blade does not appear to cause any other issues or stress on the boat. |

Thanks again Matt! Your attention to this forum truly adds value to the Hobie experience. Years ago, I had a Hobie 16 and later an 18SX. For reasons that no longer make sense, I strayed away from Hobie and went to Catalina (22 and a 16.5). Catalina support is very poor (especially with the small boats). I am now Catalina-free and back on a Hobie (kayak for now with hopes of adding a Bravo or even a Getaway to the family fleet someday). This forum and your support are very much appreciated. |
