I have a brand new Mirage tandem which was justed delivered to me on vacation in Nantucket. Its great. Sailing it by myself was great. However trying to sail it with a front passenger was impossible. No response to rudder. As a consequence I collided with a mooring line (with boat attached) and had the mast yanked back. This ripped out the the connection of the mast sleeve to the hull and also resulted in a nice round hole corresponding to the size of the ripped out nub. Is there any easy fix for this? BTW no Hobie kayak dealers in Nantucket, Ma. The official response from Hobie was "if it is on the bottom of the boat - that is not repairable in our opinion as its below waterline and can leak even with a good plastic weld job. The only repair method s welding with plastic - a dealer will need to help." Thanks in advance-Jeff Alter (No relation that I know of) |

You can do a plastic weld job yourself, call the closet dealer, see if they have any plastic ships the correct color, then you will need to get a heat gun and make the plastic weld, its not hard just make sure you don't melt the rest of your kayak! |

Thank you Sunjammer for your reply. How is the mast sleeve anchored to that nub that broke off? And if it isn't, will it just pull out? Jeff |

I'm not sure, this is a question for someone else, Matt Miller would be the best, he's at outdoor retailer so not sure how quick he will be. I think it is just molded in, I will do some investigations and try and figure it out. You have the Mirage tandem.....the sail inserts thru the scupper plug under the front seat. Do you have the Outfitter...? |

In the '06 boat the mast is inserted just behind the front seat. -Jeff |

After all this time, i hope the problem has already been solved. However, here you have the solution I gave to the same problem on my Outfitter... http://story-of-a-sailing-kayak.blogspot.com/ The image taken inside the hull shows I replaced de plastic sleeve I broke for a stainless steel sleeve. Also reinforced the base, addind the same material and fixing it to the hull with special silicone. Enjoy, Eliseo

Hollow bottom is cut to length for different boats Perhaps you can twist it out? Good luck -- let us know how it works out.
