Just bought navoinics USA. Looks promising. previously purchased navionics Marine East software along time ago for s3 which no longer work on the s4. Navionics customer service is terrible. I am pissed that I had to leave purchase the software so it would work on the s4.

It's probably great in the US but Navionics has a bad rep with boaters and fisherman here on the East Coast of Canada. They are running from data that seems to be 50 plus years old. That might not seem to bad in some geographies but for instance here on Prince Edward Island where we have no true natural stone, (our red sandstone is extremely soft and crumbly,) entrances to bays and rivers can change to be completely unrecognizable in that time. Entering a harbor with a Navionics chart anywhere on P.E.I. in a fog, almost certainly puts you at risk for running aground. Even in stable land areas, channels drift, bridges get built, buoys get relocated, etc.

Admittedly, P.E.I. is an exceptional challenge for navigation companies but I know our largest Marine Supplier will no longer even sell, much less load, Navionics charts on plotters for fear of the liability and sticks with companies more responsible for regular Canadian updates.

I'm not saying it's a terrible product for your area. Just take the time to visit thier web page where you can zoom into thier coverage maps and compare your area. It might be spot on for you. I'm mentioning it so you stay safe if your effected by this, not to dis the company.

Australian charts are accurate enough to be useful although I don't know
why Canadian charts would be any less up to date.
I have just changed from an iPhone to Android Galaxy S5.
I looked at the iPhone 6. It is very nice and the size screen is better.
The clincher was the splash proof or as they put it 30 mins at 3 feet.
I killed the last iPhone by having it unproteced in my pocket whilst
I fitted the outboard motor on the TI.
My iPhone in the waterproof cover was hard to read in direct light.
The newer phones seem much brighter and better contrast.

Anyway, I knew that I would have to buy Navionics and pay again.
Part of going from IOS to Android I guess.
Savings on the Galaxy compared to the iPhone 6 helped that.

Yes, I could buy a probably more accurate chart plotter.
Being able to plan my trip and way points at any time as I have my phone there
is a bonus. As is taking photos to add and sharing the trip map with friends
using KMZ files and Google Earth.

Everyone is right, probably better around but if you have a good mobile
a great place to start for less than the cost of a good chart plotter.

I purchased the Galaxy S5 and Navionics (the better Aus one, not the Canadian charts).

Did an adventure trip on the weekend from Kingston On the Murray to Lake Bonney
in South Australia - 6.7 Nm in 3 Hours 21 mins. It is a creek which feeds the lake
from the River and winds through a dense forrest with lots of overhanging trees.
Had to leave the sail behind and bent the shafts on both mirage drives and sheered
the pin in the outboard (replaced on the run). Two of those terrible standard kayaks
accompanied us but I was impressed with their paddling for over 3 hours. They (we)
were buggered when we arrived at Lake Bonney even after a break for lunch. So
we motored (3 HP noisy 2 stroke outboar on the TI) back and towed one kayak on a
rope and the other held on to the aka.

Hey, that's my left foot in the picture, now I'm a star 8)

This wasn't meant to be a trip report but a test of the output file from Navionics.
Nohuhu tried this and it brought up the track in his Navionics on his iPad.
Here is the link to the file -
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/135 ... 202014.kmz
If anyone would like to try and open it in Google Earth, let us know if it works.
Matt may put this on his FAQ if it works ok.

My intention is to place interesting trip reports and in particular thekmz files in the Australia
forum rather than clutter up this area with tracks that you guys cannot do.

Very cool, clicked the link and it opened right up in Google Earth. Got to watch the globe spin halfway around on the way down under...

I'm starting to think about things like this for when I get my TI next spring Was thinking I'd like a navigation/fish-finder combo (Lowrance something-or-other) to track my trips, I currently use my phone and a biking/running app. Have to be sure I can export the track data though, something like this would be great.

Thanks Joe. Good to know it worked ok. Pity you can't travel here with your TI next year as quick
as Google Earth.

I'll let Matt know that it works OK.

The charts would probably be better in a dedicated chart plotter. One of the girls on the weekend
had a small hand held and she downloaded the route. Problem was the small screen on the hand
held. An accurate forward looking depth gauge would be great but the difference between 18" of
water and 12" which can cause problems, would probably be too much to expect. If anyone knows
of such a device I would be interested to hear.

Next spring for your TI? I guess that's about 6 months away as we are in spring down under.
Whatever navigation/plotting system you use, you will love your TI.
Cheers,
Brian

My ASA instructor turned me on to this. Very good. Not free but worth the price.

@NSBPaul: By your recommendation I brought the Boating USA HD app by Navionics for €39.99 few days ago. It was working fine on my Note 8 that earlier was running Android 7.0 but now that I have upgraded to Android 8.0 the app is only loading a blank screen on the start up and crashes after a while. Can you please help me?? I hope the money didn't just got wasted.

Maybe Navionics haven't updated their app to Android 8.
Drop Navionics a line and ask them if they support Android 8.
It's always a problem that we should keep our systems up to date for security.
Unfortunately there is no guarantee that our apps keep up to date.
Good luck.

Brian

Bing Maps does a lot of things effectively, but one feature it's been missing is definitely an on-screen speedometer. Properly, now you can add one with Velociraptor, and you may even set it to attentive you when you're traveling over the speed limit.

While Velociraptor operates in other best android gps tracker navigation applications, Waze and a few other programs have on-screen speedometers integral, which means you wouldn't desire to utilize it with some of these if you don't really like hogging up your phone's methods

A problem with Navionics is that they want me to upgrade to a newer version.
That's OK except the new version has a monthly fee rather than lifetime for the old.
If Google Maps Go does the trick, the price will be better.

I think this is my first post for a couple of years.
It looks like many TI owners have moved on.
The South Australian Facebook site is probably more relevant but less informative.

Cheers,
Brian
