Material for DIY Boom

Hi all,

I have a Hobie Revo 13 - I have added stays (front and both sides) to my sail (and also built a sail toper so I can roto furl it even with the stays - thanks fusioneng !) as per suggestions here.

Now I want to add a boom to avoid taco sail downwind - I know there is a boom/batten method whereby you add a small rod into the sail bottom pocket. However, close to me I cannot easily source a small rod (say fibreglass) of the right length that will fit there.

However, there is a hardware store close to me that sells a wide variety of alumnium tubing and so I think building a boom may work as well.

Is aluminium tubing a good material for boom (I assume so as the mast is made of this ?) ? I am looking at say, 2 cm outer diameter tubing with 1.6m thickness. Is that ok size for a boom for a sail of this size ?

Where did you get the gooseneck from ? did you make that yourself ?

The angle fits so I am curious where you got it from ?

I made it with polymorph. Search google till you find the polymorph pellets. It's a thermoplastic that you can easily mold with hot water and your hands. If you get some hit me up for some tips for working with it.

I made this half wishbone boom from PVC pipe. The boom was filled with sand, heated with a heat gun, and formed. The mast gooseneck is a PVC "T" with a straight PVC insert. Both have a slit for the sail to exit on the side not seen here. The gooseneck is held in position by 1/8" braided line tied to its top and bottom, secured to the shroud ring above, and the mast base below. All joints are friction fit.
