Disregard my previous idea about drilling a hole. Went out yesterday and broke the original mast. It fractured right at the hole where the furling line came out. This hole was too big. In my first design I had drilled it so that two lines exited -one for furling and another for unfurling. It ended up being about 1/4" and elongated. I got rid of the unfurling line and used the mainsheet instead so the hole didn't need to be that big. It lasted about 8 months though. Still working on a way to lessen the tangling of the furling line around the bearing -without drilling holes. |

The question is, and honestly I didn't look that hard, but what keeps the mast from spinning inside the sail pocket or sleeve? I could not for the life of me furl the damn thing up...which is how I found my way here. I mean, yeah, I could spend half the day wrapping the sail around the mast with one hand wrapping and the other holding the mast, but surely this isn't meant to be...is it?? You can't just spin the mast and furl the sail?? I looked at the top of the sail pocket/ mast and saw nothing to keep it from spinning. This made me question how does this furler work...love the idea, but with nothng attaching the sail to the mast...I don't get it. Am I missing something?? Sorry, I need to go now...time for my monthy 12 step D/A meeting... Thanks for the help. |

Nice bit of work. When I did this I repaced the shock cord with a Clam cleat and a bit line so I could vary the down haul tension. The clam cleat just riveted to the maast. Also how do you post pictures directly into the post. Mike |

Normally the sail is bungeed to the boat, preventing it from spinning. With the reefing arrangement, the sail is bungeed to the knuckle or collar, which in turn is made fast to the mast by clamping it. Therefore, the sail will rotate with the mast. As the mast is rotated, the sail is reefed. |

So, I guess then the only way to furl the sail w/o the knuckle, is the PITA method of one hand holding the mast while the other wraps the sail and 20 feet of sheet around it?? I'm going to order the parts to furl anyway, but meanwhile I'm curious if there's another method. Thanks |

Thanks...I can see I need to do a little more thinking and less asking. Sister clips on the sheet would work well in this application. I guess I was still aggravated from trying to furl the sail, while being unprepared and just wanted some instant solutions! Thanks for the help. |

HI YA'LL, This post is mainly for Stringy and Geezer, but any one who has used or improved on their ideals please wade in. Stringy your last post on this subject you were still working on a solution for line tangling in the mast bear'n, how's that coming. Geezer your last post you were going to route your lines to the left and back to near rudder controller. How did this work for you. And does this solve the tangling problems. Either of you have new pics. I don't remember seeing pics of Geezer's set-up at all. I'm about to start my installation, but don't want to drill holes I don't need. |
