Can someone help me with a simple-ish question ?

I am considering a 2nd hand Oasis/Tandem the vendor is not much help on this score so my question to this forum is: are all the Oasis/Tandem models equipped with a mast-base for the kayak sail or could I be about to buy a boat which has no mast base and therefore can't be sailed?

The boat is an older one and definitely an Oasis/Tandem (not an Outfitter) it has the older style rudder (i.e. not a twist & stow)

I think (and this is IIRC from the house), that Mirage Tandems prior to 2006 did not have the built in mast step between the cockpits.

Instead, there was an adapter that screwed into the front seat scupper. You could still use the front seat when not sailing. But it effectively turned the boat into a solo sailing yak.

And which adapter you need depends on the serial number of the yak.

Hmmm, that's a bit of a concern cos I definitely want to sail the boat.& wouldn't want to buy it if it can't be sailed....

Can anyone from Hobie give me the low down straight from the horse's mouth so to speak?

Following on from the above response if there's a possibility that this particular hull doesn't have a mast-base installed in it, can anyone tell me if it is possible to install one from spare parts on a DIY basis and/or whether the adapter such as that described in the reply above is still available as a spare part ?

I have now scoured the 2007/8 parts catalogue and found the following text on page 8:

84960 Tandem adapter / Small (Fits Serial #1543 and lower)
84961 Tandem adapter / Large (Fits Serial #1544 - 5751*)
* Newer Tandem models do not require adapters[/color]

and this in the parts list on P32

84960 MIRAGE TDM SAIL ADAPTER KIT-SM
84961 MIRAGE TDM SAIL ADAPTER KIT-LG

So it sounds as though I need to find out what the serial number of the particular boat is...

In the meantime can anyone confirm to me exactly how these adapters work, where they fit, and whether the boat can still carry 2 people when using the sail kit installed these adapters (or does the adapter mean that the boat can only be sailed solo) ?

I would also still like to know if it is possible to DIY retro fit a 'normal' mast base to a tandem rather than use a sailkit adapter ?!

Our first Hobie Tandem (# 0402) was an '01 model built in '00. There was no kayak sailing capability then and I'm pretty sure neither adapter would work on it. I believe this information came from the Hobie plant. The seats were riveted on and not removable, possibly having something to do with this. The hull bottom had sponsons (flared hull) like the Classic (changed the following year??) and the boat had a smaller 450 lb. capacity (instead of 550 lb.). See picture below:

So I'm reasonably confident that NOT ALL Tandems can accept a sail. Be careful what you get -- I would not consider anything older than an '02 model to have any sailing capability; maybe newer. By '04 though, both adapters were available.

I think Dog may be right about the adapters fitting into the front seat scuppers, but am not sure. I can see no other place to put it and there is no mid-hull access on the older models. Without a front passenger though, you definitely need ballast to get any decent sailing at all. 8)

I think the idea with the yaks with riveted seats was to just flip the seat bottom up (at least that's what the instructions say). I didn't think to check the product support on Hobie's website yesterday. There's instructions for both adapters there:

Serial numbers 1543 and smaller: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/pdfs/Sail_tandem_1543_smaller.pdf

Serial numbers 1544 and larger: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/pdfs/sail_tandem_1544_larger.pdf

Matt will have to chime in on how far back the first adapter will go. The instructions make it sound like all the way to the beginning. But that's an ASSumption - don't want to go there.
