All,

Raced over the weekend, only the second time I've had the 20 out with a bunch of other cats (Hobies, Nacra's, Mystere's etc, probably 20 boats in all). At any rate - I notice on the upwind legs I cant get the boat to sail anywhere near as far upwind as the other boats. I've tried making as many on-water adjustments as possible - but it almost feels like they are taking me the wrong way now, and its worse. Im losing the jib and constantly falling off the wind to keep it.

I've tried playing with the jib cars (inboard and out, and fore and aft) the boards (full down, half way) the main (under adn oversheeting, to keep slot open). The barberhauler is still a work in progress for me, so have not been working that.

Any suggestions?

Mast rake is huge on this boat and I learned a lot this weekend racing the 20 for the second time. If your mast is to far forward you wont be able to point as well. I looked at 7 or 8 20s set up (we had 15 H20s racing) and they all had the shrouds set in hole 3-5 from the bottom with the rig very tight. After I changed mine, I had dramatic improvement although I still have some work to do.

A fresh jib would help also

Refer to the manual. There is a detailed setup guide at the back.

Then... drive and try to forget the adjustments. Keep the boat moving. Maybe less dagger in the water when windy and not too much weight forward as it gets windier.

+1 on forgetting the adjustments once the race starts. If you're fiddling around with gizmos, you're focusing on the wrong stuff. Getting a clear lane upwind is huge. If you're stuck in dirty air, you won't be able to point.

Anyway, some basic settings I recall from racing 20s- jib cars inboard/outboard should be about the midpoint between the hiking strap and the hull for light to medium wind. High wind, pull them out to the hull. Put at least two sets of telltails on the jib, an upper and lower at about 1/3 back from the luff. Adjust the jib car forward/aft until the telltails break even when fully sheeted upwind. Main traveler centered in all wind until you've got the downhaul maxed out, double trapped, and still overpowered, only then would we consider dumping the traveler. The downhaul is your primary power control and the crew should work it from the wire in the puffs. Pull on more downhaul to depower in the puffs, release downhaul to power up. Mast rotator generally pointed at the outboard end of the leeward crossbar. Daggerboards always down all the way upwind unless its nukin'. If you're having trouble pointing, definitely don't pull them up. Put two sets of telltails on the mainsail, one above the other, both in the upper 1/3 of the main. Use these to gauge your sheet tension, but generally the main will be pulled quite hard.

As usual - thanks everyone for the quick replies. It would take years to figure out what I learn on this board every time i post a question. Ill be on the water again this weekend.
