I just looked in the Hotline and saw Alameda. The east bay will be windy and really fun. I haven't raced the 20 in a major event in years. Maybe this one is the one to make.

Mike,

There's double and triple stacking planned, and even rumored a semi truck load coming from Iowa. :D 8)

Looking forward to the venue and meeting new friends :D

I'm just driving up from San Diego, so it's just a days drive up the road.

I still need someone to rule, are standard hobie 16 epo rudders hobie 20 class legal? They are factory supplied rudders...

...if not, I need to buy new blades.

The rudder head itself is different...somehow, it's like shorter front to back on the 20.

If EPO's would fit and were legal, I'm sure that's everyone would be running and they're NOT.

I've never noticed any serious flextion in the blades that come on the boat and other than carbon looks cool and is probably lighter and old duffer like me probably wouldn't know any real difference. Especially at the Nationals. There's a lot I can work on before pointing fingers at my boat.

Post subject:  Blades

There is very little difference in the over all profile of the M20 blade from the EPO2. I think, as Mike has found, that the standard blade is a good choice for the 20. The original reason for the different blade was more one of ... making it different rather than any better anyway. We have always had more rudder heads fail on 20s than any other and that has to be related to the small cut out at the lower casting area. I think the class should allow standard blades to be used on the 20.

Thanks for your support Matt. What do you H-20 sailors think?

Sorry but, what kind of H20 class racing is going on out there in Maui?

If your rudders break or if you have a whim, please buy some EPO2's.

As Matt has suggested and Mike is asking, should this "modification" become a legal option by the class association for racing?

Me vs. a Corsair and a few leaners. Oahu has a pretty good sized group of 20s.

If I can "whim" up $500 plus shipping I might get some.

Two thumbs up (yes).

Maybe I'm a bit out of bounds here, and if so tell me.

What you do to your boat is your poragative.

Should what those who are racing open or handicapped events influence what the opinion or vote of people who are racing One Design, in sanctioned events, deem is right for the class?

I realize there are a certain amount of 20's that race portsmouth and with mod's such as a spinnaker. Is there a modification factor "rudders other than class legal"? Not last time I checked.

You’re not out of bounds but may be off track as to the request to use another type of Hobie rudder. The request has been made to use a standard Hobie rudder for another boat specific (20) rudder. A comment made by the board factory rep reinforces the change as the boat specific rudders have a design problem. Seems like a good idea to allow the swap. I agreed with the proposal.

For some reason, after I state that I race under Portsmouth because there is no one design racing available I’m called out for trying to “influenceâ€

It appears that the Hobie only regatta edict has colored your response.

Doh!! Come on Mike, that's stretching it a bit. It's not that at all. The gentlemans way of racing portsmouth is the same as taking your penalty turn on the course, if you know your breaking the rules do something about it. No way possible for every Portsmouth regatta host to know the class rules of every OD boat entered, so the owness is on the entrant to be forthright and honest.

We're probably splitting hairs here anyway. The true performance advantage over 60 minutes of racing a 20 with or without EPO2's is probably negligable. More of a durability upgrade in my estimation.

I just firmly believe those that are racing One Design sanctioned events are the ones who have the right to decide if they wan't to change to the rules to allow the best Hobie rudder available. I need a real good reason to understand why any one else has a right to change the class racing rules.

Sure do hope if the rule is adopted they'll immediately put them on new boats. Then in ten years or so we may enjoy them too!

First, it was not my intent to start a battle. The question was just that, a question.

Second, I am not sure the EPO blades violate the letter of the rules, but the EPO blades may violate the intent, hence the question. I do not want to split hairs on this. One design racing is just that.

The Hobie 20 rule 1.1 Rudder blades, rudder assemblies and dagger boards shall be stock as supplied by the HOBIE CAT CO. Only HOBIE CAT CO. supplied after market rudders are allowed to replace stock rudders.

The EPO blade is a HOBIE CAT CO. supplied after market rudder. The question is was the intent to allow any Hobie Cat supplied rudder to be legal or only the exact same molded rudder made out of other material?

The EPO blades look cool, are slightly smaller, and may be stiffer. The real question is the question of performance. I am not sure if there is any difference either positive or negative.

Post subject:  EPO or original H20 Blade

Add to this issue...

I would like to quit making the original blade for the 20.

With all the hotrod 20 racers around here it won't make a hill of beans difference to me anyway.

I'll keep repeating "It can't be the rudders, it can't be the rudders"
