| Post subject: | Hobie for Recreation Sail? |
Over the years I have owned Hobie Formula 18's, a 21, a Nacra 5.8 and a Mystere 5.0. I am older, fatter and want to take my kids sailing on a lake. There are several 18's, a nice 16, a 17 sport and a 20 for sale. I just missed a SX and a magnum, but a 20 Miracle is available. I have heard these are very sensitive race boats and constantly need tweeking and are a complicated boat for a recreational sailor. I am more concerned with weight. I am bumping 300 and each kid which would go out one at a time are 125 ish so I'm thinking the smaller boats may not be ok. I need some imput from 20 owners may of you also have 16's or have sailed them or 18's. I only want to buy one boat and not the wrong boat. We are not going to race. Help please! |

The 20 is a Cadillac ride. You don't need to tweak anything. They also can handle the weight better than an 18. I love the 20. |

+1 on the hobie 20. you can de-rig the jib to a slower simple 2 way like a Hobie 16 but the room and buoyancy on the boat is great. Get it if its in good condition. |

For fun sailing with a bunch of people, I don't think you can beat the Getaway. There's a late model on listed for sale on the Getaway forum. |

IMHO I LOVE the 20 (have 2) and the 18 (have many)........but..........I think the better boat for you and the (learning) kids is the 18. The 20 can be over powered and when you let the kids go on there own, the 18 is almost indestructible (I said almost). The 20 has thinner hulls, more expensive sails and is more complicated. The 18 is simple, cheap, strong, thick, and will handle your weight. Teach the kids and let them fly...... |
