I just got a furling setup for the 20. Does anybody know if it is class legal to convert my jibs to vertical battens so they will furl better? Ryan

I think you would have to prove that there was no direct bearing on speed/performance and get written approval of the change. So basically, no - it would not be a class legal change.

I read the latest copy of the class rules and can't see where vertical battens would be prohibited. I just want to have the existing battens reoriented on the sail to furl it. There is already one nor cal boat that does this. Ryan

I agree with SRM, you need written approval from IHCA, read General Rules #12.1, 12.2 and then #4. In my old Division if someone had their sails modified in such a manner the 20 skippers would be polled before the regatta and if one skipper objected then the modified boat would have to race in the Open Class. That is why you need written IHCA approval.

Would buy another if Hobie would build it.

You don't need to look any further than rule #1 to answer your question.

ONE DESIGN CLASS RACING
The design and development of Hobie Catamarans are directed towards strict one design classes where the true test is between sailors and sailing skill, and not boats. Any alterations to the hull form, construction, equipment, spars, sails or running rigging, as supplied by the builder except as is specifically authorized by these rules, are a breach of these rules, both in spirit and in substance, and are prohibited.

Basically, if it doesn't say you can do it, then you can't do it.

Note that your question was whether or not altering the jib batten position is class legal. It is not. If you had asked whether you would be protested for making such a change, I would have said most likely, no.

My hobie 20 stock jib furles about 90% even with the mini battens in place. Plenty of it rolled up to not flog in the high winds on the beach or when de-powering when coming in hot!

Ok so the prevailing opinion here is that this would require a rule change. Just an FYI, consulted one of our Nor Cal hot shots and he does not see this as an issue.
Who would be the point of contact at Ihca to find out how to petition for this simple change to be added to the class rules. Yes I know any changes would require a vote of H 20 owners. Ryan

Suggest contacting one of the officers at North America Hobie Cat Association

The first point of contact would be Pat Porter, HCANA Chair - [email protected]
The rule would have to be drafted and fairly specific as to what's allowed.
The rule is then submitted to the IHCA Rules Committee - Erik Olsen is the chair - [email protected] (Pat Porter is a member of this committee). The proposed rule is posted for comment on the IHCA website, then after the comment period, the Rules Committee will either reject the change or forward it for approval to the IHCA Council who will vote on it.

The process does not involve a vote of Hobie 20 owners.

if you don't race it do what ever you want. If you are going to seriously race it then take the furler off and race it.

It's unlikely that anyone in DIV 3 is going to protest you with that... they'd be happier for the competition. Also, the modification will reduce the leech support for the jib, and help your competition. Since the sail can furl up almost entirely on the furling drum I don't personally see the advantage. Get that thing ready for Wet and Wild!

I'm having my Whirlwind jib modified with vertical battens to see how it works out. Will report back after I sail the boat with the modification. I personally don't see any disadvantage to this and my sailmaker here in Alameda agrees with me. Thanks for laying out the process for proposing the rule change. Ryan
