Post subject:  Trailering - mast questions

Ok here goes some nervous questions I have about trailering a Hobie 20.
Mast questions:
1. Is it ok to leave the diamond wires on (under tension) during trailering?
2. Does it matter if the mast groove (sail track) is facing up (skyward)?
3. Does the comp-tip need to be placed/supported at the joint?

1) Yes. This is the preferred method since keeping the wires tight helps to stabilize the mast and loosening & re-tightening each time would be a major PITA.

2) No. This is the orientation that Hobie recommends to prevent damaging the plastic comptip track. The mast track can also be pointed downward, but in that case it needs to be adequately padded to prevent damage.

3) No. The comptip joint is plenty strong to handle trailering loads. Support the mast just as you would an all-aluminum mast.

Using adequate padding at the forward and aft mast supports and tying down the mast securely is the key to preventing damage to the aluminum and composite mast sections. Most trailering damage results from the mast rubbing against the supports because it was not properly secured.
