Post subject:  Rudders for the H20

Are the rudder blades from a H20 any different than other rudder blades? Question is: can I replace a H20 rudder blade that is badly cracked broken, with any other hobie rudder blade? Talking another hobie that is being used as parts. an old 18. or for that matter any Hobie with same material (older rudders not the new rudders) I don't have a boat for parts but I know that they are out there.

The original Hobie 20 blades were a different profile (outline) than the rudders used on all the other boats. As far as I know, Hobie stopped producing the H20 blades a while back and they now recommend their standard blades be used as a replacement for the original H20 blades.

Both types of rudder blades are very similar in size and they function in the same rudder castings as the Hobie Wave/17/18 (new style). So a rudder blade from a Wave/17/18 (new style) would be a drop-in replacement on a 20. Rudders from a H14, 16, or 18 (old style) could also be used but the holes would need to be re-drilled.

Since the rudder profiles are different, you would probably want to replace the rudders in pairs. Also, since the H20 rudders see a lot of load, you will want to use one of the higher end fiber reinforced rudders (like an EPO I, II, or III or one of the Hobie fiberglass rudders). Do not be tempted to put on a Nylon or old Lexan rudder. They are not shaped as well as the higher end rudders, so you will likely experience rudder stall at high speeds. They are also not as strong, so there's a good chance they would break off under load.

We built some more of the original H20 blade somehow, so still available.

40490001 RUDDER BLADE, H20 $350 USA / USD 2017

Other than that... You would need the EPO3. Fiberglass. The plastic blades would work in a pinch, but not worthy of the size and performance of the 20.
