Post subject:  EPO 3 install on my H20, Need Help

Hello All,

We just bought H20 sail #360 in Charleston SC. I got the EPO 3 rudders and am looking to install them but the head profile is a lot different as well as the shape of the blade and the leading edge of the rudder head. I see these are big problems moving forward.

First, rudder head shape. The overall shape of the head doesn't seem to work with the rudder casting I have, which I believe is the stock casting for this boat.

Second, the lower leading edge of the rudder doesn't fit into the curve of the casting when the rudder would be in the down position.

Third, the shape of the foil is so different that the placement of the rudder in the down position is critical.

I have been searching and searching for photos or descriptions of how people dealt with these issues with little to no luck. Have any of you installed these EPO 3 rudders? How? Photo? Process?

Thank you Matt. I have found this template before however like your post its not to scale. I found one that is to scale but it doesn't have the h20 hole positions. Do you have the ability to make a PDF to scale with the H20 hole positions on it?

Also, I did see on the post about the H20 Magnum and the comment about the older H20 cracking on the inboard side by the front cross bar. Mine has that crack and I would like to know your thoughts on repairs. It is in front of the bulkhead so fixing from the inside is not possible without cutting a hole or removing bulkhead.

Download the image, bring it into a image editing program (Photoshop or Gimp (free)), adjust the scale, print, measure, repeat until the printed size is correct.

It isn't rocket surgery.

Most print functions allow you to scale as well.

I don't know if you figured this issue out yet or not but the EPO3s sail very different than the EPO2s. Some 20 sailors in Div 3 have actually gone back to the 2's because of the difference.

I drilled my EPO3 using the same pattern/holes on my EPO2s and had much more positive helm. I had to rake them further forward to get the helm to balance out. I had to file my castings and narrow the front of the rudder to accomplish this. The helm is now better but I still find the leeward rudder can cavitate under full sail (17-20Knots wind) going to weather in chop. Big problem racing.

The rudders sail differently period. I like them but only because I could figure out how to use them. (They look good to)
