Post subject:  Tiger Main Halyard Knot too small

I finally took my new-to-me/used Tiger out this weekend and had an issue with the main halyard. The instructions say to put the halyard through the hole at the top of the sail and tie a figure-8, but the line is too small for that. A figure-8 will pull right through the hole. The hole doesn't appear to have been enlarged, so I'm thinking that the original owner must have replaced the stock halyard with a smaller diameter (dynema) line. Just to get me on the water, I tied a bowline through the hole and it let me raise the sail, but the line was damaged (cut) somewhere in the process.

What's the best way to secure this smaller line so it won't pull through the hole? One thought was to get a stainless fender-washer with a smaller diameter hole to put on the knot-side of the sail. Any other great ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

Use a plastic stopper ball - similar to ones you see on the trap systems.

Thanks Jacques. I had actually thought of that but wondered if the ball was strong enough. I'll give it a try!

There is zero load on the halyard while sailing - it is just for hoisting - once it's locked in the top the halyard does nothing.
