We're looking at upgrading from our trusty 1989 SX 18 to F18, and a number of boats come to mind.
First off, we do not campaign, this would be primarily for round the buoys club racing,
with a couple of local regatta's a year. With luck, we could travel to Brewerton or Toronto
or CORK for perhaps one regatta a year.

Suggested upgrades are Tiger, Wildcat, Infusion and Capricorn.
(Don't shout at me about non Hobie products, just reporting what boats were mentioned).

I'd go for a used Tiger myself, however, it would be great to hear from others re the benefits/cost
to upgrading an 'older' Tiger (2004 or 2005) to the newer configuration.
Also which upgrades are 'nice' vs which upgrades are 'critical'.
Or, do we look for a 'newer' Tiger, which comes with all the good stuff?

Which of the F18's are the most 'forgiving' to sailors new to the F18 class?
Any other words of advice? (Chris, I treasure the advice in your email, thanks).

The only thing what i didn,t like from my tiger was the mast rotation ,above the boom (the square one ,not the round boom )
while tacking the mast rotation "fall "down and collided with the boom while tacking

Whe removed the roller jib and stuff and for a battend jib

I think the conditions off your sails are most important

I think a tiger is more heavy duty than a Nacra

I've gone with the Tiger since I'm only doing club races and being located in Hawaii, there isn't much of a chance for a large F18 fleet. I bought a boat that has the lower mast rotation, newer rudders, SNU snuffer and spinnaker sheeting angle moved forward for the newer sail cut (still didn't get new sails).
I did install the port daggerboard pull up system which is very cool and very cheap to do.

If you tinker a bit and enjoy sailing then get a used Tiger. If you want to play hardball with the big boys go spend your kids tuition.

John-

If you're simply looking for a performance upgrade to satisfy "spinnaker envy", the Tiger is your boat. There are many around and parts are readily available (thanks Hobie!).

If you want to do some serious racing with the Canadian F18 fleet, the Tiger is still not a bad first boat (just ask about Mischa and the Can Nats a few years ago in Toronto), but you might consider one of the newer boats.

The Tiger is getting closer to the flat portion of the depreciation curve, so what you might consider is getting the Tiger for a year or two and if you're totally smitten, you could probably sell it for close to what you put in and then upgrade.

Good Luck - made the same jump myself last year and don't regret it a bit.

Jeff
