Post subject:  2nd Set of Spinnaker Blocks: Anchor Point? Make & Model?

Have any of you installed a 2nd set of spinnaker sheet blocks, such that you can recommend an anchor point for attaching them?

Some of the NF18s & N20s that I sail with have them attached via an eye strap riveted to the rear side of the front crossbar, similar to what is implied by the sketch on the Harken web page:
http://www.harken.com/rigtips/formula18.php

I have a 2006 Tiger, with the trampoline below the front crossbar, so I guess that the rear of the front crossbar should work. But, if I am going to drill holes in the crossbar, I would like to get the location right the first time!

Also, any recommendations for a make & model of block that's better for this purpose than two Harken 2625 57 mm Carbo Ratchamatics? Those appear to be essentially the same as the single set of spinnaker sheet blocks that was on the Tiger when I bought it.

Also, those NF18 & N20 sailors refer to the 2nd set of spinnaker blocks as "sissy blocks". Is that common terminology? A less judgemental name would be nice!

In any case, we have cut short our racing day due the crew's fatigued hands, and they say the 2nd set makes a dramatic difference, so I've promised to put a set on our Tiger.

Thanks for your help!

That's why they're called "sissy blocks".

They're mounted on the back of the front crossbar, about 30 inches in from each end of the crossbar. The measurement is not that critical. Just be consistent from side to side.

Harken Carbo Ratchamatics are the top end; you can also get regular ratchet blocks or free-wheeling blocks, but they don't work as well as the auto-ratcheting ones.

We have attached these blocks to the jib traveller track as shown here:

It works very well. We have the 57 carbo ratchamatic, but probably a simpler one without ratchet is sufficient or even better (at least adjust the ratchamatic so that the ratchet only works with a lot of tension) so the sheet can run freely in the tacks. The main purpose of these blocks is to make shure the sheet touches the outer blocks (these should be with ratchamatic) on a longer path which increases friction sheet/block when the ratchet is on.

Matt, Claus - Thanks for the info! I'll try them attached to the jib traveller mount, and move them later if needed.

Claus, does that make for an awkward sheeting angle? Do you not have the setup to hook the blocks on the inside of the beam? Maybe newer Tigers with the new tramps are different..

My boat doesn't (2006) and I did not want to drill the front beam. For us this solution works very well, I don't know about the sheeting angle but my crew has not protested yet

I use the outside of the self tacker mount. tied to a set of 55mm ronstant free wheeling air blocks. My 100lb crew likes them this way. Sheet runs through the tweeker blocks to the orrigional spin block, Up to the sissy block across the tramp to sissy block, spin block and tweeker block. this makes the middle of the tweeker block the pull point and you can carry the sheet from one side to the other.

We tie ratchamatic blocks to the front beams in the corners up against the inside of the hulls instead of drilling holes in the beam to rivet in loops. I've done it on my original lower tramped Tiger and current latest high tramped Tiger and both have worked fine. We like auto ratchets on the beam and swithcable ratchets in the original positions. My crew just flicks them on it its a long day.

Cheers
