:D Hobie Cats Northwest has moved to Seattle. They are at Magnuson Park, North Shore, Building 11. This is the same building as Sail Sand Point. Be sure to stop by and check out the new shop. They are on the south end, west side of the building.

:D The new phone number for Hobie Cats Northwest is 206-985-8080.

Do not forget to call Dan Carpenter and volunteer to help out at the Seattle Boat Show Jan. 25 thru Feb. 3, 2007. See http://www.seattleboatshow.com/. They will need help on the move in, and move out, and people to help man the booth and spread the word on Div. 4. Help them again get the "Best in Show" Award in 2007.

Post subject:  SWEEET!! One stop shopping

Do you think we'll be holding the Splash Regatta on the SSP side for '07 ?

We'd have ALL the Waves out for that one.

Ooooh, and all that free parking....No ticket police! I'm liking this more and more.

Tenative Div. 4 Schedule for 2007 includes Splash Regatta in Kirkland, May 26-27, 2007 and a Regatta at Sail Sand Point June 30-July1, 2007.

On another note :( check out the webpage www.sailsandpoint.org for pictures of the wind storm damage at Sail Sand Point. A notice was sent to all customers PRIOR to the storm to secure their boats.

Ouch! Looks like people should use the tie-downs a bit better. Gonna stir up some anger as members confront each-other over damage received from other boats, even though THEIR boat didn't move.

We got quite a bit of widn down south in Vancouver. My boat is trailered, tarped, and didn't move an inch but I lost the roof panels from my back patio/firewood cover (thankfully they stayed in the yard, some should be salvagable).

Anyone go out sailing? ;)

We have had wind storms in the past, but this one had more damage. The Access/Storage Customers at Sail Sand Point sign a contract which notes they are responsible to properly secure and drain their boats. As reported, the people that did this had no damage.

The other issue many people do not address is to properly drain their boat, and elevate it so it will continue to drain. Covers blow off, and leak. Water freezing in the hulls can cause considerable damage, as will the weight of a boat full of water.

It is really quite easy to block the trailer wheels to keep it from rolling, and tie down the boat to the trailer. Many of our Cats are on trailers. Since this was a Navy Air Station, and we are located on the tarmac, there are many aircraft tie downs in the concrete surface. We have also anchored our fence with the tie downs.

Doubt if any one was sailing. Along the coast, reports were as high as 100 mph. I was watching on our website www.sailsandpoint.org, which has a link to the 520 bridge video/wind station. The highest I saw was 63mph. This is about four miles south of Magnuson Park, and Sand Point Northshore. Excellent way to check conditions before you go sailing, and to get accurate weather and traffic reports. The video is live, and updates continously.

Caleb,

I saw that there is going to be a Sail Sand Point points regatta this year - should be fun! Is there going to be enough parking/boat storage available? That is the worst part about Kirkland Splash. Also, can we camp out there? Maybe take over Dan's loft if not :) I'm sure he'd looove that.

Also, since I didn't get to check it out too much when I was there at the AGM, is there a beach or anything either there or nearby?

tjp, this link will show you a layout of SSP.

In actuality it is close to this. There is a lot of parking.
Search through the SSP web site and look at some of the pics there. You can get an idea of what the site is like.

Just double click on design to see the proposed layout.

Neat! How much of that is done? Is there a beach yet or still just a big concrete bulkhead?

Looks like the plan is to significantly increase the boat storage area too. Not that it affects me...mast up storage 2.5 hrs away vs 30min setup time....

Post subject:  Where's the Dealer?

Caleb,
I was out there Wednesday morning, and I couldn't find the new Hobie Dealer location. I called the new number and got an answering machine stating that they were closed for the holidays.

But I still didn't see a single sign for the new location. Is it too early? I was fully prepared to support the new location with some good old fashioned spending!

tjp,

As beach goes its gravel and sloped, not to bad to go up and down on.

There are three great big ramps with mild slopes that it is real easy to roll your boat up and down on your cat tracks or even loading your boat onto a trailor if you want. The whole setup is quite convienent for mast up storage.

Although not as good as a sandy beach, but soo much beter that the old concrete seawall that was removed.

I hope Dan gets some signs up soon! The signage is horrible for that area in general (it took me 20 mins to realize that I had to turn left IMMEDIATELY after entering the park gate when I was up there). I know that they will probably re-sign everything anyways when they finish the massive reconstruction of the area, but both Hobie Cats NW and Sandpoint should put up some signs both at the turn and on their building, as well as some "Parking for xxx here!"

That building is a hunk of junk (reminds me of many of the old engineering buildings in college where they had been redone and re-purposed 50 times in their life but never all at once) but with the gutting and re-construction of the place in the coming year, it will be an awesome location.

Now, we need to get a Hobie dealer in the Portland Vancouver area! Support your local dealer yes, but I'd rather order online than drive 2.5 hours north!

:) Tim, when you were at Sail Sand Point for the Div.4 AGM in Dec. we did have a tour of the new Hobie Cats Northwest location. Perhaps you left before the tour. The Northshore Facility, Building 11, where we met, and Sail Sand Point are all very much a work in progress. Since the Navy turned over The Sand Point Naval Airstation to Seattle, it has become Magnuson Park, with very strict rules, one of which is signage.

Hobie Cats Northwest will be able to add some limited signs to identify their current location, which is at the south end of Building 11, about 200 ft from the end, and enters on the road to left, west side, behind the building. Folding signs, similar to realtor's are at the entry to the park, and locations to the Northshore. Sail Sand Point and a Kayak dealer now have these signs in place. Hobie Cats will add similar signs.

To the building. Building 11 was the Base Maintenance shops, 44,000 sq ft, and had many additons over the 40 years it was in operation. There are several tenants in this building, many are non profits like Sail Sand Point. Last year, the City after trying for several years to raise money to develop the Building, took bids to find a developer, after a prequalification round of elimination. The option was to tear down the Building, leaving the future of Sail Sand Point much in doubt.

We worked with a local Architect-Developer, who also is a volunteer, Board Member at Sail Sand Point, to get qualified for the project. They were sucessful, and after much delay, the remodel will be underway this year. This is a all private funded project, about $7 million.

Several firms including Hobie Cats Northwest and Sail Sand Point have put their futures' on the line by committing to renting space in this project, also known as Building 11 LLC. For the Developer, they have to do all the design, approvals, contracting to bring the building up to code, meet the tenants needs, after raising the money from private, no Government, sources. This will be in return for a long term lease on a building that they can never own. I do not know where we find these Angel's, but that is what it takes to make these projects happen.

Tim, this is probably more information than you needed, but wanted to make sure everyone in the Division was aware of the commitment being made by Hobie Cats Northwest and Sail Sand Point to the future of the Northwest Facility at Magnuson Park.
