where can i find the written rules about the start? in the racing rules from hca it doesnt mention the start rules.....thanks

i have a copy of the rules you suggested but it doesnt mention the start specifically and it seems to me that a lot of the rules one would follow after the start do not seem to apply before, i need more specific help where to look,

for example the overlap rules do not seem to apply, bc people can come from behind get and overlap, not get clear ahead and call you up, i hope i am clear here i am new and it seems that no one has the rules clear when it comes to what happens before the start........

With the exception of a few rules, the rules are the same before the start as they are after, the only difference is that before the start there is no "proper coarse", hence allowing the leward boat to take the windard boat up to the moon and back. I would recomend buying a copy of the rule book and the book "Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing" found at West Marine or other boat stores (no affiliation to either). The book helps to take what can be comlex and confusing information for a new racer and simplifies it so that you can interpret and apply the rules easier. After you have been at it for a while, the rules just seem second nature, like looking both ways before you cross the street.

I would highly recommend Dave Perry's book "Racing Rules of Sailing through 2008." It is very informative and entertaining. It will cover a lot of the things that go on before the start.
