I'm gonna race singlehanded this year, with some lead weight to put me at H16 class minimum. I'm 235# (6'9" tall so I'm still kinda skinny) and I've got 50# of lead flashing that's been rolled out and stuffed into a tramp bag = 285# = minimum for racing. My wife loves coming to the regattas but isn't into being on the water all day. Oh well, someones gotta get the grill going!!! Blair |

Adding weight just makes you slower. I dont understand  .There is no Hobie class regattas in my area. It is all open. We dont add weight we just take the penalty. 73.72 . To bad we are so far away. Sail the Bay in Va. Beach this May is going to have a good h16 single class. I would also imagine in your area there are a ton of non hobie regattas.

I do only Hobie class racing, we do a couple in Maine, upstate NY, CT and will probably get enough boats to do a 16 class regatta in Newport RI too. I'll also go down to NJ a few times as well. I tried a couple of open regattas, not really my thing, people on big lead mines look at me funny, wondering where is my fridge and head... Adding weight can make you faster, actually, to a certain point. I find that one of the problems singlehanding in heavy air is the tendancy for the 16 to stop dead to wind when you tack. As soon as the nose hits head on, I start to move backwards, not a great racing tactic! Adding a bit more weight helps with momentum to carry a turn better. When it's over 15 knots, double trap territory, singlehand may loose out upwind as you will need to depower as much as possible, but you'll probably make up the lost ground on the downwind leg! |

20knots is about the limit for me as well , but i get to sail in that pretty much most of the time so am kind of used to it. I also mainly sail my 18 so when I get on the 16 I find it super easy. I will be doing Statue of liberty this year so maybe i will run into you. BTW which is also a open race. I did not mean racing with lead sleds. This was hatteras last year. We had 8 H16 singlehanded 16s on the line.
