What are the suggestions for best light wind sailing on a Hobie 16? We have a beach race for 40 miles in light winds, 6/8 mph or so, from the SSE and will be running an E course. So mostly on a good reach but not as much wind as I would like. Hopefully the forecast will improve but I can use all the advice and pointers offered. It will be a long day.

Long reach in light air:

1) Keep your weight forward - way forward. Have the crew sit on the leeward side or lie on their side behind the mast.

2) Trim the sails by the tell-tales. A lot.

3) Raise the windward rudder.

Mast rake doesn't matter much on a reach.

Really only matters going upwind.

Thank for the tips. We had the Txas Dash yesterday along with the final leg of the GT300 and I came in 7th out of 23. First race and I was outclassed by every other boat. I had the only 16 foot boat on the water but still held my own. The weight forward was a great help. I had my GPS and as I moved forward, 220#, and sat on the forward beam we picked up 1-1.5 mph. We also popped up one rudder for a bit of help. It was light wind and we ran 7/10 mph for 40 miles. Long, hot day but great fun.
Thanks for the tips!
