I would like to know more about youth racing. What hobie events are presently planned for youth sailers? What are the age ranges for youth sailing? What boats do the different youth ages sail on?

Hi Glenn,

The youth activities vary from location to location. Where do you sail?

There's an annual Youth (age <21) and Junior (<16) North American Championships that are sailed on Hobie 16s (Youth) and Waves (Junior). The 2011 event hasn't been formally scheduled yet, but we're working on having it in mid/late June on the Gulf Coast.

In addition to our main event that Matt mentioned, we hope to get involved with some of the Junior Olympic Sailing Festivals held around at various locations in the US. Last year, we were involved in the one held in Maryland and are currently looking into the possibilities of asking for inclusion in other similar events.

Thanks for the information. I sail on the Gulf Coast. I am interested in knowing more about the Junior NAC, do they single hand the Waves? I don't own a wave, do most Junior sailors own and bring their own boats, or are there other options?

I am working on the budget and proposal for the Jr. NAC to be held at OSYC right now. My intention is to find enough boats for loan/charter that either every JR. kid will get his own wave (for non owners) or we'll do a round robin style with them. The Sr. kids will be on Hobie 16s and thats a BYOB deal, but we hope to have a few charters.
I hope to have this polished off in a month.

Is there any thought for combining the NA youth nac with the Hobie 16 and Hobie 20 NAC and having it sometime in the summer at the Ft Walton site?

This would help facilitate one trip for us from Northern California to the east coast especially if the 16 youth event is a BYOB and the youth are out of school

Not this time, the 16/20 will be late fall. We're talking about 3rd week of june in Biloxi for the youth and women along with 14/Wave/17 and 18. . There should be charters avail (with no major 16 event going on, we should have a ton of freed up 16s to use-see what I mean?) if kids choose to fly into NO or Mobile, plus Bridget Q is the Chaperone and we'll have housing avail with some of the
OSYC families.

:D We attended the US SAILING Junior Olympics at Rock Hall, MD this year. Great event, and hope to return in 2011. Also, working on including the Hobie 16 in the Junior Olympics in Seatte, 2011.

Hi Caleb,

We are currently working here in Div11 to obtain an invite to a local Junior Olympics Sailing Festival. Now Div11 overlaps several different "Regional Sailing Authorities" ... so we are currently investigating which JO's venue would be best for us to solicit an invitation too and concentrate our efforts in support of that event. Of course Div11, the HCA-NA and many others are ready to support this effort.

On the Chesapeak Bay the JO's are held at a different Yacht Club on the Bay every year as the event is rotated around ... but we have been "informed" (by CBYRA Offical's) that RHYC can expect the JO's to return to RHYC much sooner then usually expected .... something about "the best in recent history" was told to us .....

The response to the participation of the Youth Catamaran Sailors has been fantastic .....

And Caleb, having your grandson and you attend, flying in from across the country added immencely to the overall character of the event!!! Thank You for all your support and efforts .....

So we are working ... to make it happen .... again!!!

Hello Chris:

Are the dates for the Youth / Junior North American Championships the same as the Wave & 14 - i.e. June 17, 18, 19 2011 at the Ocean Spring Yacht Club, MS? or has this been determined yet.

Thanks.

- Dwight

That is my plan, but it has not been determined for sure yet. I have to get board approval first and there is a small hang up with the Women's event that may change the event by a few days depending on how it goes.

Ladies, Gentleman, and Junior Sailors,

I have just recieved some E-Mails from Mr Buzz Reynolds/Island Hieghts Yacht Club and chairperson for the Barneget Bay Yacht Racing Assoc's Junior Olympic Festival and Ms Marilyn Lennon/ Commodore Seaside Park Yacht Club. Mr Reynolds had agreed to including a Junior Multihull Class, using H16's, but IHYC is max'ed out w/ +300 boats already launching from IHYC .... sooooo ..... Mr Reynolds approached (for us), Ms Marilyn Lennon, Commodore of Seaside Park Yacht Club (which is located nearby) who has asked the Board of Directors of SPYC if the Junior Multihull Class could use SPYC's facility to launch from ......

The answer is ....... YES!!!!

So I can offically announce .... the Barneget Bay Yacht Racing Assocation's Junior Olympic Festival on July 25-26th will include a Junior Multihull Class. The race will be conducted using One-Design rules, and the H16 has been selected as the boat to be used.

We have some details to work out yet .... and alot of work to do .... but this event will happen!!!!!
