I've been Hobie sailing for a number of years now. I've finally put together a 16 that id consider racing. Ive become a member Of HCANA. Now where do i go to race?

I am 21 years old and live in Charleston, SC. Ive tried to get a hold of the listed contact for fleet 53, is this fleet still active? ive got the spring 2011 hotline and the next listed regatta is the Alter Cup Area D-S Qual. Can i participate in this regatta?

Current racing experience is sailing team in college coed dinghies, sailed one design: J24, Snipe, Thistle, Laser.

Just trying to figure out what direction to go.

Unfortunately, Hobie 16 one-design racing is pretty thin in your area.

The short answer to your question about the Alter Cup Qualifier is "yes," but you need to be a US SAILING member. That's another $50.

What used to be Hobie Division 9 morphed into a multi-class, multi-manufacturer catamaran racing association called Eastern Multihull Sailing Association - http://www.emsa-sailing.org. Their calendar shows at least one or two more events on the schedule this year - http://www.emsa-sailing.org/schedule.htm

The Spring Fever Regatta on Lake Hartwell, GA will have a substantial 16 fleet - but it's not until Easter weekend next year.

How far are you willing to travel for a weekend regatta?

It's on the Davis Island Yacht Club calendar, but not on the US SAILING Multihull Championship web site. Dave Ingram is the guy that would know what's going on for sure. He's at the F18 North Americans this week, but is on-line during the evenings - [email protected]

I will warn you that this is an "open" event, meaning all kinds of catamarans will be on the same starting line at the same time, racing on corrected time. Most of the boats there will be high-performance spinnaker boats. The Hobie 16 tends not to do well in these events.

If you've got the time, I recommend you go to the Hobie 16 North American Championships in Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Nov 7-11. You'll learn a lot more from the best 16 sailors on the continent. It's only about 120 miles further than Tampa, plus you get to sail for 5 or 6 days straight.

How can I find out about the race at Davis Island? I live nearby and would like to meet other sailors.
